BrauBeviale will open the exhibition halls in Nuremberg from 13 to 15 November 2018. Due to moderate growth, an extra hall has been added this year. This results in a new hall configuration, positioning exhibitors in the order of the beverage production process chain around the exhibition park.

Sipa’s latest Open House in Italian Vittorio Veneto drew customers from all over the world for a first look at a line taking PET pellets to filled and capped bottles via Xtreme preform injection-compression moulding, latest generation bottle blowing, and Flextronic filling. They also saw a brand-new baby stretch-blow moulding machine, which is already up and running. The new Xtreme Sincro Cube system and the Xtra 14 SBM unit were put through their paces every day from October 22 to 26.

Krones, a leading manufacturer of filling and packaging solutions, has acquired MHT Holding AG (MHT). MHT, based in Hochheim, Germany, together with its subsidiaries is providing injecting moulding tools and services to the PET industry. The company generates approximately €25 million revenues with 125 employees.

The trade fair alliance consisting of drink technology India (dti), organised by Messe München, and indiapack pacprocess and food pex India, organised by Messe Düsseldorf, recorded higher numbers of exhibitors and occupied more exhibition space. The fair’s further growth reflects the dynamic development of the Indian beverage and liquid food market, in which high growth rates are again forecast to climb.

Athena Automation Ltd., a company manufacturing injection moulding machines near Toronto, Ontario, announced that it is changing its name to Niigon Machines Ltd. “This allows us to emphasise our business objective of becoming a global leader in customised injection moulding machines” said Robert Schad, Chairman. “Niigon is an Ojibwa word that means ‘for the future’.”

Petainer, a global leader in one-way kegs, is partnering with Great Leap Brewing in China to start manufacturing petainerKeg in 2019. This is in response to rapidly growing demand for draught beer in China and the suitability of one-way PET kegs in a country where logistics are complex. The announcement follows the commencement of Brazilian manufacturing in September with partner Blue PET, marking key steps in Petainer’s growth strategy and commitment to bringing the supply chain closer to the market. Petainer also manufactures in Europe, the US and Australia.

Berlin startup share is the first beverage producer in Germany to sell its water in PET bottles made of 100% recyclate. With its expertise from the Bottles & Shapes consultancy program the KHS group supported the company by helping to design and develop the bottle in a very short time.

Tomra Sorting Recycling has promoted Business Development Engineer László Székely to the newly-created post of Head of New Plastics Economy. This initiative reinforces Tomra’s commitment to the aims of the New Plastics Economy (NPE) and will steer progress towards objectives which are differentiated from the company’s other business development activities.

PTI has entered into a business alliance with Big 3 Precision Products, Inc., Centralia, Illinois, to help brand owners achieve quality and speed-to-market goals for products sold in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. For the past three decades, PTI has been the confidential development engine behind many well-known PET bottle commercialisations. Big 3’s Mold Services Group has been a leader in producing moulds for single-stage PET blow moulding machines, as well as injection blow moulding equipment.

At the Ocean Conference, organised by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation presented another chapter to its activity, called New Plastics Economy Global Commitment. The Commitment aims to create a new scenario for plastic packaging by eliminating single-use packaging materials, increasing the amount of reused or recycled plastics in new products and promote innovation to ensure 100% of plastic packaging can be reused, recycled, or composted by 2025.

Four months after the founding of the new business unit Keycycle, it can be seen that Erema and its range of overall solutions for plastics recycling projects is being welcomed with open doors in the marketplace. The newly formed team has in the meantime received a number of project inquiries, most of them for post-consumer and PET applications. The reason for the high demand is, on the one hand, the increasing industrialisation in the sector and, on the other hand, the growing interest among newcomers in plastics recycling.

To introduce the latest Cold Jet Plastics Edition line to the visitors of Fakuma, Cold Jet's dry ice application and plastics expert, Steve Wilson from the company's headquarters in the USA was on site. He answered questions and provided visitors with information about Cold Jet's tailored plastics equipment and accessories, specifically designed to substantially reduce downtime and increase mould cleaning effectiveness in the plastics and rubber industries. Visitors could see Cold Jet's integrated cleaning solution, a Plastics Edition i³ MicroClean, along with a robot. The combined system demonstrated the automated cleaning of moulds, PET preform moulds, deburring and surface preparation prior to painting.

Everyone who’s anyone in the field of plastics processing came together at the once again fully booked out Fakuma international trade fair for plastics processing on Lake Constance where Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet for the 26th the time from the 16th through the 20th of October. The European Parliament has adopted its negotiating position on the Commission proposal on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment. Many MEPs shared EuPC position in limiting the scope of a proposal that, since the beginning, has been rushed by the European Commission with possible negative effects for health and hygiene.

“Bottled water consumption is set to overtake all other soft drinks worldwide this year,” according to Richard Hall, Chairman of Zenith Global, the global food and drink experts, speaking at the 15?th Global Bottled Water Congress in Evian.

Illig, the German machinery manufacturer, will build a new production site in Romania. During the next few years Illig Maschinenbau SRL will develop into a further production site outside Germany located in Sura Mica industrial park in the Sibiu region.

United Caps, an international manufacturer of caps and closures, announced it has installed four trio-technik AirMove transport systems in its German Schwerin plant, which primarily serves the German beverage market. The 10,000 m2 facility occupies two production halls, employs 58 people, and produces several billion 28mm and 38mm closures per year for still and carbonated water, juices and milk.

Private equity investors Advent has invested in Manjushree Technopack Ltd., India’s largest rigid plastic packaging solution provider, in partnership with the founding Kedia family. As part of the transaction, Advent purchased all the shares owned by Kedaara Capital and a portion of the Kedia family’s stake in Manjushree Technopack.

On October 11, the Sidel Group concluded the acquisition of PET Engineering Srl, further expanding the company’s portfolio of packaging solutions. PET Engineering is expected to help Sidel expand its packaging offering – especially regarding the design of containers for water, soft drinks, liquid dairy products and beer.

At the Fakuma trade fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany, Engel will demonstrate a further reduction in cycle times for the production of caps. An all-electric Engel e-cap 2440/380 will be used to produce 26mm caps, including tamper-proof bands made of HDPE, at a cycle time of under 2 seconds under realistic manufacturing conditions. The optimised movement of profiles allows an increased output. The Engel e-cap 380 with 3,800kN of clamping force can provide a dry cycle time of 1.4sec.

Krones has completed the acquisition of W.M. Sprinkman Corporation, Wisconsin, U.S. Founded in 1929, Sprinkman provides engineered food and beverage processing equipment, specialising in the dairy and brewing industries. Employing over 125 employees at its Waukesha and Elroy, Wisconsin locations, the company serves customers ranging from start-up microbreweries to large multi-national food and beverage producers. Sprinkman generates approximately $35 millions in revenues.

The EU Single Use Plastics Directive Proposal is currently under the assessment of the European Parliament. The proposal foresees the consumption reduction of PET trays - a circular packaging product with a high amount of recycled content. This goes entirely against the development of the last years, PET sheet manufacturers have been increasing the amount of recyclates in their products steadily.

Döhler Group and Passina Group have reached an agreement on the acquisition of Concentra Europe BV with its Dutch and German subsidiaries by Döhler Group. The proposed transaction has now been filed with the relevant antitrust authorities and is conditional upon their approval.

LineXpress from Krones enables bottlers running PET containers to achieve a complete article change-over to different products, types, formats and packs in record time. The programme consists of individual automation components. In conjunction with the machines of the bottling line concerned, these modules control the processes involved and support the operators in their work. Advances are particularly apparent in terms of replacing the moulds, where the MouldXpress Robot module comes into play, rendering operator interventions almost entirely superfluous when moulds are being replaced on the Contiform 3 Pro.

Petainer and its Brazilian partner, Blue PET, have started manufacturing Petainer’s one-way PET kegs at the new blow moulding plant in Tijucas, Santa Catarina, in the South of Brazil. The first blown petainerKegs already rolled off the production line ready to go to our brewery customers in the region. The plant serves the domestic market and will also become the manufacturing hub for the South American region.

Arca Continental, one of the world’s largest Coca-Cola bottler and its company Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages, held the ground-breaking ceremony for its new production and distribution facility in Houston, Texas on September 25. Arca Continental and CCSWB leaders were joined by federal, state and local authorities to celebrate the beginning of the first Coca-Cola plant built in U.S. in a decade.

The world market for aseptically packed products amounted to 152 billion litres in 347 billion packs during 2017, according to the new Global Aseptic Packaging report from leading food and drinks consultancy Zenith Global Ltd and packaging experts Warrick Research Ltd. Volumes, have risen by 2.7% a year since 2012, with South East Asia achieving the fastest annual growth rate of 7%, followed by China on 6%. Beverages such as fruit juice accounted for 39% of aseptically packed products, with white drinking milk responsible for 38% and other dairy/food products making up the remainder. Aseptic filling has also become established for soups, sauces, tomato products and baby foods. By 2022, Zenith and Warrick estimate that the world market will reach 176 billion litres and 410 billion packs. The majority of additional demand will come from South East Asia as well as China.

Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) has named Matthias Erdmannsdoerfer Managing Director of Max-AI. Prior to this new role, Erdmannsdoerfer served more than six years as President of National Recovery Technologies (NRT), a leading developer of optical sorting technology and subsidiary of BHS. As Managing Director, Erdmannsdoerfer will be responsible for the Max-AI product line including Sales, Business Development and Product & Application Development.

GEA is expanding its D-tec valve line with the new GEA D-tec P/DV control valve for ultraclean applications in the food, beverage and dairy industries. This allows reliable control of process parameters such as volume flow, pressure, temperature and filling level of a vessel. Due to the hermetically sealing D-tec stem diaphragm, the valve achieves a higher standard of hygiene. For example, it helps ensure product safety in beer mixes and soft drinks, fruit juices, milk-based and lactic acid-fermented products or sauces, and contributes to a longer minimum product shelf life as is often demanded by the market.

Fifty percent is the ideal recycled bottle content to help meet sustainability objectives and avoid compromising the recycling stream for future lifecycles, according to Phoenix Technologies International, a leading global producer of polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).

Ioniqa is scaling up its technology for infinite PET plastic upcycling: the technology company is building its first PET plastic up-cycling factory in the Netherlands at Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen. As of summer 2019, PET plastic waste will be converted into high-grade, pure PET raw material, of which new food packaging will be made.

With its third edition, the trade fair for the food, beverage and packaging industry in South Africa has established itself on the market. The international packaging technology, materials and design show Tokyo Pack returns to Tokyo Big Sight International Exhibition Center from Tuesday, 2 October to Friday, 5 October. This year's theme is “Let's create packaging for all our tomorrows”. Petcore Europe announced the first speakers and the draft programme of its annual conference in Brussels from 6-7 February 2019 in the Renaissance Brussels Hotel. The first day is dedicated to the perspectives and strategy of the PET value chain followed by a networking drink and dinner. The second day focuses on the latest developments in EU legislation as well as challenges, trends and solutions in collection, sorting & recycling as well as circularity & sustainability issues.

According to a newspaper article in the Rhein Neckar Zeitung (RNZ), the recycling machinery manufacturer Herbold Meckesheim, Germany, has been hit by a fire that broke out on the site on Monday night, September 10. Werner Herbold, one of the two managing directors, estimated the damage at five to ten million euros, reports the RNZ.

Norway-based company Norner launched an upgraded version of their gas barrier simulators with new functionality to calculate CO2 transmissions and gas transmission at dynamic conditions for O2, H2O and CO2. A web-based calculator for barrier properties was developed by a team of Norner experts and is a tool for making simulations in the packaging design phase. By using this calculator, the developer can investigate changes in design and layer structures without expensive testing in a screening phase. It will also be possible to reduce instrumented testing of permeability and actual testing of shelf life in the development phase.

PepsiCo announced its goal to achieve 50% recycled plastic (rPET) in its bottles by 2030 across the European Union, with an interim target of 45% by 2025. Through this target, the company will more than triple the amount of recycled plastic it uses, equating to over 50,000t of rPET. The announcement comes in support of the European Commission’s voluntary recycled plastics pledging campaign to ensure that by 2025, ten million tonnes of recycled plastics are used to make new products in the EU market.

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and a group of leading bottled water and soft drink manufacturers have launched a report at the House of Commons, which sets out an ambitious roadmap to eliminate plastic packaging waste from the bottled water and soft drinks value chain by 2030. The report, the first of its kind, is set out to enable and encourage other industries and countries to create their own systemic roadmaps and visions to eliminate plastic packaging waste.

Global reverse vending leader Tomra Collection Solutions has been named as one of the container refund point operators for the upcoming container deposit scheme in Queensland, set to launch on November 1. The initiative will contribute to the state’s goal to increase the rate of recycling and reduce the impact of drink container litter in the natural environment, by incentivising consumers to return their empty containers.

Universal Dynamics, Inc., a company of the Piovan Group, completed its move from Woodbridge to Fredericksburg Virginia, USA in July of 2018. The newly outfitted structure, which occupies 110,000 square feet (10,000 square meters), was designed with lean manufacturing practices in mind, and will allow the company to double its production capacity.

DEMETO (Modular, scalable and high-performance DE-polymerization by MicrowavE TechnolOgy) is a European Project financed by the European Community into the framework of the Horizon 2020. The partners of the consortium are working to bring to reality a revolutionary new way to chemically recycle PET, invented by gr3n, which is both sustainable and profitable.

The outlook for the blow moulded bottle market is positive with further output growth, increasing demand for added value products and for the use of recyclates shaping the landscape, according to a newly published report from industry consultants, Ami Consulting. Blow moulded bottle demand in Europe was 189 billion units in 2017, up from 176 billion in 2013, with the fastest growing market segments have been sweet and savoury spreads and still water.

In an effort to provide a consistent metric to guide the efforts of sustainability for plastics in the Circular Economy, two of the leading global international recycling organizations have developed a global definition governing the use of the term “recyclable” as is relates to plastics packaging and products. August 29, 2018 | Coconut milk in PET

Huanlejia, well-known as a Chinese producer of food and beverages, recently started producing its coconut milk – formerly packaged in HDPE – in PET bottles. Its main objectives in this change were to reinforce its brand image and increase production speed. The new coconut milk PET bottle is produced on two Sidel complete aseptic PET packaging lines, running at 48,000bph.

Avery Dennison will be the first pressure sensitive labelling material supplier to introduce liner made from recycled PET (rPET) commercially in Europe. This move reflects the firm’s commitment to finding more sustainable solutions for the labelling industry.

August 27, 2018 | Sugar-cane based closures

United Caps, an international manufacturer of caps and closures, and Braskem, a leading Brazilian petrochemical company, reported they have collaborated to deliver to the market Greener bio-sourced plastic caps and closures. Bio ethanol, the feedstock for "I'm green" Polyethylene, the basis for United Caps Greener bioplastic caps, is derived from sugarcane, a renewable alternative to traditional fossil feedstocks.

In July 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) awarded GEA a letter of no objection (LONO) for its ABF 1.2 technology, an integrated blowing, filling and capping solution featuring a fully aseptic rotary blowing machine. It is the only system equipped with a 100% aseptic blower that is allowed to produce shelf-stable low acid (LA) beverages free from preservatives for distribution at ambient temperature in the U.S. market.

Lorien Engineering Solutions, a division of GP Strategies, is working with soft drinks provider Britvic to help install new state-of-the-art production lines at Britvic, the largest supplier of branded still soft drinks in Great Britain and the number two supplier of branded carbonated soft drinks in GB. Britvic’s Leeds and Rugby factories have been developed to provide new PET bottling facilities, with new bottling lines introduced at both sites.

The North American beverage packaging and processing industry is experiencing major growth according to the 2018 Beverage Trends in Packaging and Processing report and infographic, produced by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies. The expected growth rate is 4.5 percent ($45.5 billion in the next ten years).

Arca Continental, the second largest Coca-Cola bottler in Latin America, launched its Development, Environment, Recycling (DAR in Spanish) program in Ecuador in order to promote a culture of inclusive recycling and boost its PET recovery efforts in the country. Based on the sustainability goals established by Arca Continental and Coca-Cola of collecting and recycling 100% of the primary packaging that goes out to the market by 2030, the program is aimed at creating better economic, social, and organisational conditions for base recyclers.

PTT Global Chemical PLC (GC) and together with TOC Glycol Co., Ltd. (TOCGC), a subsidiary of GC Group, announced to sign joint venture agreements with Mitsui Chemicals Inc.(MCI), to cooperate in managing Siam Mitsui PTA Co., Ltd. (SMPC), a PTA producer, and Thai PET Resin Co., Ltd. (TPRC), a PET producer. GC and TOCGC will hold 74% of the shares in SMPC and TPRC, while Mitsui Chemicals will hold 26%.

Long-time Coca-Cola business partner Mc Donald’s recently announced that it plans to expand its popular Mc Café coffee drinks to the beverage aisle next year with three new ready-to-drink (RTD) Mc Café Frappes – Caramel, Mocha and Vanilla. The new drinks, to be produced, distributed and marketed by the Coca-Cola system, will be available in re-sealable PET bottles at retailers nationwide.

At the 2018 Pack Expo show, Agr International, Inc. will feature its latest developments for managing the production and quality of plastic containers. Featured at this year’s show will be Agr’s Process Pilot blow moulder management system. The system is designed to simplify the production of PET bottles in the three steps measure, control and optimise.

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL) announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Sorepla Industrie S.A., a plastics recycling facility in France. Founded in 1991, Sorepla Industrie is one of the largest recyclers in Europe. The facility consists of three production lines; recycled PET (rPET), recycled high density polyethylene (rHDPE) and food-grade pellets, with a combined capacity of 52,000 tonnes per annum.

PepsiCo, Inc. today announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously elected Ramon Laguarta, 54, to succeed Indra K. Nooyi, 62, as Chief Executive Officer. Nooyi will step down on October 3rd after 24 years with the company, the last 12 as CEO. She will remain Chairman until early 2019 to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. Laguarta was also elected to the company’s Board of Directors, effective October 3rd. Laguarta will become the sixth CEO in PepsiCo’s 53-year history.

Sustainable technology company Anellotech recently achieved new milestones at its T-Cat-8 pilot plant in Texas, thereby progressing its 100% bio-based bottle collaboration with global consumer beverage company Suntory.

Neste, a leading producer of renewable diesel, is exploring ways to introduce liquefied waste plastic as a future raw material for fossil refining. Scientists from the University of Portsmouth and the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have engineered an enzyme which can digest some of the most commonly plastics, providing a potential solution to one of the world’s environmental problems. The discovery could result in a recycling solution for millions of tonnes of PET bottles. Professor John McGeehan at the University of Portsmouth and Dr Gregg Beckham at NREL solved the crystal structure of PETase—a recently discovered enzyme that digests PET— and used this 3D information to understand how it works. During this study, they inadvertently engineered an enzyme that is even better at degrading the plastic than the one that evolved in nature.

Pretium Packaging, a leading North American manufacturer of plastic containers and closures, has acquired Cox Container, LLC, located in Troy, Alabama. Cox specialises in extrusion blow moulding of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers for food, beverage, dairy and industrial applications.

Plastics Recyclers Europe announced that 78 PET recycling facilities located all over Europe were evaluated. The results point to a PET recycling capacity in Europe of 2.1 million tonnes for 2017. Of the total installed capacity in Europe Germany (27%), France (15%), Italy (14%) and Spain (9%) account for 65% of the PET recycling market. Overall, 1.9 million tonnes of PET plastic waste were transformed into 1.4 million tonnes of recyclates which were used for the production of new articles. According to this data, 200.000 tonnes of PET installed capacity remains unexploited.

Sustainable technology company Anellotech states that it recently achieved new milestones at its TCat-8 pilot plant in Texas, USA, thereby progressing its 100% bio-based bottle collaboration with global consumer beverage company Suntory. Anellotech’s TCat-8 pilot plant is using Bio-TCat technology, a thermal catalytic process which converts non-food biomass feedstock material into BTX aromatics, a group of renewable chemicals identical to their petro-based counterparts. The first shipment of BTX has now been sent to joint development partners IFPEN and Axens for purification studies to make bio-paraxylene – the key aromatic chemical needed to make 100% renewable beverage bottles a reality. Bio-paraxylene from TCat-8 will be used to make renewable PET resin for prototype bottle manufacture and product testing.

Neo Group, producer of PET granules, located in Klaipeda Free Economic Zone (FEZ) in Lithuania, launches a new production line. The additional capacity of the new line is planned to reach 480.000t/a, intended to strengthen the company's position in foreign markets and to become the second-largest company of this kind across Europe. It is estimated that the market supply will grow by 155,000t of products annually.

Two new members will join Alpla’s board of management from 1 July: Klaus Allgäuer will become the new Chief Technology Officer (CTO), while Walter Ritzer will become Chief Operations Officer (COO). Until now, the Alpla board consisted of CEO Günther Lehner, CCO Nicolas Lehner and CFO Georg Früh. Now, Klaus Allgäuer is joining the management team as CTO with Walter Ritzer joining as COO. "With these changes, we are taking proactive steps with regard to the generational shift at the top level of the company. The Co-op is set to implement the UK’s first plastic bottle deposit scheme, becoming an example for retailers to look back upon when implementing their own schemes, says GlobalData, a data and analytics company. As part of a strategy to tackle plastic waste, the UK government’s recent proposal to implement a deposit return scheme on drinks bottles has set the wheels in motion with UK supermarkets. The Co-op is looking to trial its own scheme this summer by implementing bottle depositing vending machines at several popular UK festivals.

Alwin Lehner, founder of the Austrian packaging solutions specialist Alpla, died on Tuesday evening at the age of 86. Alwin Lehner, born in 1932 in Bregenz, Austria, founded “Alpenplastik Lehner Alwin GmbH” together with his brother Helmuth Lehner. He led the company to international success.

The Martens brewery in Belgium is using Direct Print technology by KHS and, together with a French supermarket chain, is placing specially designed bottles on the shelves for the soccer World Cup. To mark the big kick-off in Moscow, Belgium’s Brouwerij Martens is offering its premium beer in 32 country-specific bottle designs on the French market. Various images of the participating nations have been printed straight onto the PET bottles using Direct Print.

Arca Continental, one of the world’s largest Coca-Cola bottlers, announced that it will build a new production and distribution facility in Houston, Texas, through its subsidiary Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB). After a little over a year of becoming the first Latin American bottler to operate in the U.S. Coca-Cola system, the Monterrey, Mexico-based company announced that it will invest US$250 million in a facility close to 1 million square feet in size. This will be the first Coca-Cola production plant built in the U.S. in a decade.

After the acquisition of Denmark-based IceTech in 2016, Cold Jet has further expanded European production of its dry ice cleaning and production systems in Poland and Denmark. In addition to these facilities, Cold Jet has installed several technical information and training centers in Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Poland. These technical centers are open for customer visits, demonstrations, sample test trials and training sessions for new and existing customers and partners.

United Caps, an international manufacturer of caps and closures, announced it has acquired the Spanish closure manufacturer Embalatap. The acquisition acts to extend the United Caps product portfolio, especially as it relates to closures for edible oils typically used in the Southern European market. United Caps welcomes all Embalatap employees to the United Caps family and will maintain the existing manufacturing location.

In order to meet the growing demand, Wintec is enlarging its production plant in Changzhou, China. "The production area will be more than doubled, and by the end of 2019 the number of employees in production alone will increase by 60 percent", reports Michael Feltes, President Sales and Service of Wintec, at the beginning of the Chinaplas plastics trade fair, end of April in Shanghai, China. Construction work is expected to commence in the autumn of this year. The plan is to already use the additional area by the fourth quarter of the coming year. Altogether, Wintec is investing more than 10 million euro into the first big expansion of the site since the company was established four years ago.

The 2017 Financial Statement for Sacmi Imola shows higher sales and an increased gross operating margin with respect to 2016. Like its parent company, the Group as a whole closed the year by improving on the previous year’s performance, with sales touching 1.434 billion euro; the net consolidated result was over 35 million, also on the rise compared to 2016.

More than 2,100 companies from 121 countries gathered at NPE2018: The Plastics Show in Orlando, Fla. last month to make new investments and debut manufacturing technologies. NPE2018, hosted every three years by the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS), concluded on May 11, wrapping up five very active days of commerce on the trade show floor and numerous new and returning educational programs.

Alpla, Inc., a global manufacturer of rigid plastic packaging for a wide range of consumer products, announced that it will build a new plant with at least 50 jobs by the time it reaches full production in April 2019. The plant, located adjacent to the Dayton International Airport in Park 70/75 represents a $21 million investment in 154,000 square feet of an existing building which will serve current and new customers within Alpla’s growing list of US locations.

PlasticsEurope supports the overarching objective of the “Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment” presented by the European Commission, namely to reduce marine litter in our seas. PlasticsEurope states that marine litter is a result of a combination of factors, the most important of which being the lack of implementation of waste-related legislation at national/regional level, the lack of proper waste management in some parts of the world and inappropriate littering behaviour.

By purchasing the remaining shares, Krones has taken over Till GmbH in its entirety. Under the name of Dekron, the group’s subsidiary is now synergising the entire technology portfolio for digital decoration technology. The Krones product portfolio themed around digital decoration of containers had previously been split between two companies: firstly, Krones AG itself, and secondly Till GmbH, in which Krones had owned a majority shareholding of 51 per cent since 2014.

Sabic is reinforcing its activities in the plastics caps and closures (C&C) market. At the Plastic Closures Innovations Conference in Berlin on May 22-24, where Sabic was the headline sponsor, the company discussed its new Caps & Closures Industry segment, launched at the beginning of the year. CarbonLite Holdings LLC has announced that PET bottle-to-bottle recycling company CarbonLite will build a new plant, to be located in the state of Pennsylvania. This facility will enable the company to increase the number of post-consumer PET beverage bottles it recycles annually by 50 percent – to more than 6 billion. The new $60 million plant is scheduled for startup in late 2019.

Bühler successfully closed the sale of 80% of the Polymetrix shares to Sanlian Hope as per March 22, 2018. The Bühler Group remains a minority shareholder with 20% of the Polymetrix shares.

Petainer, manufacturer of one-way PET kegs, is partnering with Blue PET in Brazil to start manufacturing petainerKeg - its global family of keg products which are increasingly being used by breweries for draught beer. Blue PET, which specialises in producing bulk volume PET containers such as 5USG refillable bulk water packaging, will begin manufacturing at its new plant in Tijucas, Santa Catarina, in the South of Brazil in early June 2018. The blow moulding plant will serve the domestic market as well becoming the manufacturing hub for the South American region serving emerging markets in Argentina, Uruguay and others.

The Erema Group closed the 2017/18 fiscal year at the end of March with double-digit growth of over 10 per cent. The companies integrated in the Group have once again achieved a new turnover record with consolidated sales reaching 155 million euros for the first time.

Anellotech, a sustainable technology company pioneering the Bio-TCat process for production of cost-competitive renewable chemicals and fuels from non-food biomass, announced a key operating milestone, achieving two weeks of continuous operation of its seven-story tall TCat-8 pilot plant, producing aromatics (primarily benzene, toluene, and xylenes) from loblolly pine feedstock. Anellotech also secured an additional $6 million investment from Suntory Holdings Limited, which was part of a previously announced $15 million package. Suntory’s total investment in Anellotech’s program is now more than $30 million.

Amut and Erema are holding an Open House to present a sophisticated "Bottle to Packaging" process from 28 to 31 May 2018. Washed post-consumer PET bottle flakes will be recycled live at the AMUT headquarters in Novara, Italy, to make food contact grade thermoforming sheet in a direct process. This rPET sheet will be used at the Plast Milan exhibition – which is being held at the same time – to make thermoformed trays for the food sector. Interested producers will be able to process their own input material on the demonstration system in future to make plastic rolls. They can then test the samples later in their own thermoforming production to check the quality.

Corpus Christi Polymers LLC (“CC Polymers”) - a newly formed joint venture between Alpek, S.A.B. de C.V. (“Alpek”), Indorama Ventures Holdings LP (“Indorama”) a subsidiary of Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited, and Far Eastern Investment (Holding) Ltd. (“Far Eastern”) - has entered into an asset purchase agreement with M&G USA Corp. and its affiliated debtors (“M&G”). CC Polymers will acquire the integrated PTA-PET plant currently under construction in Corpus Christi, Texas, certain M&G intellectual property, and a desalination/boiler plant providing water and steam needs to the Corpus Christi Project. The purchase agreement provides M&G with a binding bid of $1.125 billion in cash and other capital contributions.

Commitment to sustainable packaging - Waste Free Oceans has announced a new partnership with Henkel to remove plastic waste from oceans and rivers – and transform it into over a million bottles used for the Lovables laundry brand. The collaboration is the largest that WFO has agreed so far and will run for at least three years. Together, the partners aim to remove enough plastic from rivers, lakes, seas and oceans to produce 100 tonnes of usable recycled material each year.

PET pellets from post-consumer drink bottles provided by PET Recycling Team GmbH, a subsidiary of Alpla, result in greenhouse gas emissions that are only a tenth of the level for new material. This has been confirmed in a recent investigation. Last year, PET Recycling Team (PRT) in Wöllersdorf, Lower Austria, obtained a measurement of the environmental impact of recycled PET (rPET) produced in-house. The calculated value was a carbon dioxide equivalent of 0.45kg for every kilogram of material produced. A new calculation by c7-consult takes into account the now optimised power mix, resulting in a carbon dioxide equivalent of just 0.21kg.

At the trade fair Beviale Moscow, held from 27 February to 1 March 2018, 146 exhibitors (2017: 130) showed their products and solutions relating to beverage manufacture and marketing to more than 5,300 visitors (2017: 4,000), in an exhibition area of about 2,000 square metres (2017: 1,600). New elements this time were the programme points covering wine and soft drinks, which were very positively received.

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global chemical producer, has announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire M&G Polimeros Brazil S.A. in Ipojuca Brazil. The plant is the largest PET facility in Brazil, with capacity of 550,000t/a. This plant is strategically located and benefits from virtual integration with a manufacturer of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), a key feedstock to PET. The transaction is expected to be completed in second quarter 2018, subject to regulatory approvals.

A pioneer since 1979 and now a leading bottled water provider in the Gulf area, Emirates Natural Drinking Water has selected Sacmi to complete a recent investment decision aimed at expanding production further. Sacmi is supplying a complete filling line to replace the existing plant. The goal is to raise output capacity from the current 15,000 cases of water a day to 23,000. The new Sacmi line has been designed to produce small-medium formats (500ml or smaller) at output rates of 34,000 bottles/hour (500ml format).

Petcore Europe has created the new Plastic Aerosol Recycling Special Industry Group (SiG) in order to anticipate the need to recycle higher amounts of plastic aerosols. This industry task force is therefore looking for ways to increase the recycling volumes of PET products from the household packaging waste stream.

Coca-Cola announced the goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle or can it sells globally by 2030. The company and its global network of bottling partners will tackle the ambitious goal, which is part of a holistic plan called “World Without Waste,” through a renewed focus on the entire packaging lifecycle – from how bottles and cans are designed and made, to how they’re recycled and repurposed.

Amcor has proven its LiquiForm technology with the commercialisation of the first consumer package. Amcor partnered with Greenblendz, a Michigan-based co-packer and developer of private label, environmentally-friendly consumer products, to develop and commercialise packaging for the Nature’s Promise brand of hand soap. Amcor produced the 12oz PET bottle on a proprietary Amcor-built machine powered by the LiquiForm process. The new machine is the industry’s first manufacturing unit to successfully utilise the LiquiForm technology.

Nestlé Waters NA has identified Centre County as a potential location for its third Pennsylvania bottling facility. The Centre County region is currently a leading candidate for a proposed $50 million bottling facility that would create an estimated 50 manufacturing jobs. Nestlé Waters’ search for a new factory location is driven by growing consumer demand for bottled water, which in 2017 surpassed soda as the most popular beverage in the United States. As part of the company’s regional spring water model, the proposed factory would bottle Deer Park 100% Natural Spring Water for distribution to customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

Out of 3.147.000 tonnes of PET bottles and containers placed in the European market in 2016, a remarkable number of 59.8% - in total 1.880.900 tonnes - were collected and thereof 1.773.200 tonnes mechanically recycled. These conclusions come from the annual PCI Wood Mackenzie PET recycle survey for West Europe in 2016, commissioned by Petcore Europe. It shows that the collection rates increased by 7.4%, while the recycling rates also grew by 7.3%. In 2016, that resulted in 129.400 tonnes more collected and 120.000 tonnes more recycled PET compared to 2014.

Clariant launched the Senseaction line of colour masterbatches intended for use in the production of caps and closures used on bottled water packaging. Senseaction masterbatches, which are available in a wide range of colours, are specially formulated, processed, tested, and certified to be free of detectable negative organoleptic (taste and odor) effects.

Nestlé Waters Iran has been signing a first-of-its-kind partnership with the Institute for Environmental Research at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, to reduce the impact of PET bottles. The 12-month project is intended to help to understand the current PET waste landscape in Iran, before jointly developing an action plan with various stakeholders, such as environmental protection agencies and consumers, to improve the management, collection rates and recycling of PET waste in the country.

The market research institute Ceresana has analysed the European market for rigid plastic containers. In many applications, plastics replace other materials such as glass or metal: Ceresana forecasts the European sales of plastic containers to reach a volume of more than 12.4 million tonnes in 2024.

The R&D/Leverage open house event included presentations on trends and developments in packaging design and mould manufacturing. Almost 50 attendees from global converters to brand owners attended the three day event, ran from September 20-22. The theme was "Breaking Down the Silos in Plastic Packaging" where R&D demonstrated that working with design, engineering, and manufacturing early in the planning process, fosters innovation and cost efficiency.

On 1 November 2017, Otto Hofstetter AG, the manufacturer of moulds for PET preforms and the packaging industry, opened a branch office in Luxembourg. With this new office, the family-owned company from Uznach, Switzerland, is expanding its international presence and increasing its proximity to its customers in the EU.

Alpha Packaging Inc. announced that it has acquired a plant in Etten-Leur, the Netherlands, from Graham Packaging Company. The transaction – for which terms were not disclosed – was completed on November 2nd. Alpha, with headquater in St. Louis, Missouri USA, is a blow moulder of bottles and jars for the growing consumer markets, including the nutrition, pharmaceutical, personal care and niche food and beverage categories.

The new European project on chemical recycling DEMETO is officially launched. DEMETO aims at enabling chemical de-polymerisation of PET at industrial scale based on its microwave-based process intensification, focusing as a start on coloured bottles waste.

The amount of materials used to make polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, and glass bottled water containers has been reduced by 42.8 percent between 2007 and 2015, according to a new study. The Quantis Life Cycle Inventory and Environmental Footprint of Bottled Water for the North American Market study found the total grams of bottle material per gallon of bottled water (excluding labels and caps) has been reduced from 129 grams in 2007 to just 73.9 grams in 2015.

Nestlé Waters has announced that it will strengthen its collaboration with the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) to certify 20 factories by 2020. Nestlé Waters has already certified four bottling facilities in Sheikhupura, Pakistan, and in California (Ontario, Sacramento and Livermore). It plans to certify additional sites in Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

In May 2017, the European Plastics Converters Association (EuPC) launched a European survey on the current and future use of recycled plastics materials (rPM) in the Europe’s plastics converting industry. The selection of caps and closures is hardly straightforward nowadays, and new varieties for beverages, cosmetics, and other goods are constantly being developed. Market research and consulting company Ceresana analysed the European market for plastic caps and closures already for the second time. Simple standard screw caps are still sold most frequently, however, caps and closures with an increased functionality gain importance in individual application areas. The analysts of Ceresana expect demand for plastic caps and closures in Europe to increase at an average growth rate of 2.0% p.a. until 2024.

In its 2015/2016 sustainability report, the system provider KHS GmbH documents its ongoing measures, achievements, and goals pertaining to strategy and social, ecological and economic issues. With over 76,000 visitors from more than 170 countries, drinktec has chalked up the best-ever result in its 66-year history. The number of visitors rose by 10,000 over the previous event in 2013. In particular at the international level, the trade fair was able to grow attendance again, this time by 12%. The ratio of visitors from outside Germany thus rose to 67%. The number of exhibitors increased to 1,749 from 80 countries. That is mainly attributable to the wine technology trade fair SIMEI, which was held as part of drinktec for the first time, as well as further growth in the number of exhibitors at drinktec itself.

Russell came to SPE in 2014 with a quarter of a century of experience in the plastics industry and as a long-term member and volunteer leader of SPE, including a term as President of the Society in 2011-2012.

Drinktec Gebo Cermex, Hall A6 - Stand 330 Gebo Cermex, part of the Sidel Group, will showcase a range of material handling solutions, including the latest developments in automation and connectivity to help secure greater performance from bottling lines in evolving and demanding markets.

Drinktec Vipoll Hall A2 - Booth 303 The Slovenian specialist in filling plants, Vipoll, will be presenting a world premiere with its "All-in-One" combined rinser/filler/capper block for glass and PET bottles as well as cans. The "VISITRON VKR-E 32-32-4K/4D" is able to process 9,500 330ml cans and 330ml bottles per hour. The system is suitable for carbonated and still drinks such as beer, soft drinks, wine or juice.

Recycled PET (rPET) from PET Recycling Team GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alpla based in Wöllersdorf/Lower Austria, results in 79% lower CO2 emissions compared to new material. This is a significantly higher saving than previously assumed. A study conducted by denkstatt GmbH on behalf of Alpla came to this conclusion.

Pretium Packaging, a North American manufacturer of plastic containers and closures, using technology from Practically Impossible Labs, Houston, Texas, has developed a 64-ounce, 38-400 mm finish, stock PET container with an integrated handle.

RPC Promens Consumer Llantrisant has launched a series of PET bottles suitable for all types of sauces, condiments and toppings. The new Mercury range combines high shelf impact with consumer convenience. The stylish curved design and glass-like clarity of the PET ensure that products are displayed to their best advantage, while the lightweight, easy-to-handle and squeezable bottles are ideal for home use.

Movacolor, developer and manufacturer of high quality dosing systems for the plastics industry, is going to build a new building in its current location Sneek, The Netherlands. It is expected that the international company will move to the fully energy-neutral building in the third quarter of 2018. The 100% sustainable building will include solar panels, top cooling in the entire building, underfloor heating and heat pumps. Of course, charging stations for electric cars are provided.

Italian company ACMI installed a complete packaging line for PET bottles able to handle round and square bottles at Ferrarelle SpA. The rated filling speed is 40,000 bottles per hour for round formats and 36,000 for two litre square formats.

Drinktec Tech Long, Hall B5 - Stand 322 At Drinktec 2017 Tech Long will introduce its G5, Generation 5, blow moulding machines to the European market. The G5 machines are available in formats from four to 36 cavities, with a blowing rate of 2250 to 2400 standard bottles per hour per cavity, and with the capability to blow any PET container from 0,2l to 20 litre.

At around three months before the start of drink technology India (dti), the event is attracting strong interest from exhibitors. Over 90 percent of the available exhibition space is booked. Which means the event is approaching full capacity. Among the companies that have signed up to exhibit are leading names in the sector, for example, ACE Technologies, Anton Paar, Chemco Group, Krome Dispense, Repute Engineers, R J Brewing and The Brewmaster.

Holland Colours is launching Holcopearl 2287 for PET packaging. The polymer-based product is intended to deliver deep colours with optimal dispersion on automated lines running at high speeds. “The idea to develop Holcopearl came from customer feedback and the trends we see in the industry and among our customers and their customers,” says Wilfried Grob, Sales & Marketing Manager Europe at Holland Colours. Among these trends are the moves to higher production speeds, deeper colours, more sensitive dosage settings, and the switch to spherical PET granules instead of cylindrical ones.

Drinktec Lanfranchi, Hall A6 - Stand 103 The intense R&D activities which have been a feature of Lanfranchi in recent years have led to a new result in terms of technological developments applied to unscramblers: the automatic change-over. The Unscrambler 2.0 is capable of handling a wide range of containers of different shapes and sizes.

Sesotec GmbH, a manufacturer of machines and systems for contaminant detection and material sorting for the food, plastics, and recycling industries, is growing in all segments, which correspondingly need more room. Early in July 2017 service acceptance at the company headquarters in German Schönberg therefore was relocated from Regener Straße 130 to Industriestraße 5. The new location lies close to the company headquarters and combines repairs department, spare parts storage, training rooms, technical support, and – now new – service acceptance.

Avery Dennison has strengthened its research and development capabilities with the hiring of Pascale Wautelet as vice president of R&D – Europe, Middle East and Africa within the company’s Label & Graphic Materials group. Wautelet, who will assume her new role on Sept. 1, will be based at Oegstgeest, The Netherlands, and report to Hassan Rmaile, global vice president of R&D for Avery Dennison’s Label & Graphic Materials group.

Alessandro Paini is the new General Manager of Sacmi Beverage, the company Division that, since 2009, covers all areas concerning the design and manufacture of machines and complete plants for beverage packaging. A mechanical engineer - and previously a key figure in a leading international Group that designs in-PET liquid packaging solutions - Paini has extensive Product Management experience. His past duties are ranging from coordination of R&D and global product portfolio management to development and implementation of new sales strategies.

Drinktec Arburg, Hall A4 - Stand 323 Arburg will demonstrate at Drinktec its injection moulding technology which has been specially optimised for the packaging industry, particularly for fast sequence and high-cavity moulds. The exhibit, a packaging version of the hybrid Allrounder 570 H, has a clamping force of 1,800 kN and a size 800 injection unit. Twenty-four drink bottle caps will be produced in a cycle time of only 2.7 seconds on a high-performance mould from Z-moulds. The weight of the HDPE moulded parts is 1.25 grams. A vacuum conveyor and a direct colouring device ensure a correspondingly high throughput. Quality monitoring is carried out in-line using an optical system.

Boxmore Packaging, with headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, will become a fully owned subsidiary of the Austrian packaging specialist Alpla. Boxmore Packaging is specialised in PET preforms, PET bottles and closures, and currently employs around 1,000 members of staff at nine locations.

Drinktec And+Or, Hall A4 - Stand 202 The handle applicator SIAL6000 performs the insertion of (PP) lateral, colourable handles on PET bottles (from 2 up to 5 litres). This system allows PET bottles to be used for certain products when an easy pouring process is required.

Freudenberg claims to be Europe’s largest user of recycled PET in construction applications. The technology group has been active in recycling since the 1990s. The company’s plants in Novedrate and Pisticci Scalo, Italy, as well as in Colmar, France, recycle millions of PET bottles every day. The purified recyclate is processed into nonwovens that are used in construction, for example as substrates for bituminous waterproof membranes.

The upturn in domestic Italian packaging machinery sales has continued in the first quarter of 2017, on the heels of the two digit growth figures at the end of 2016. According to data collected by the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association Ucima, domestic sales have grown by +6.5% in the first quarter of 2017 over the same period of 2016, following the excellent +10.4% growth at the end of 2016.

The Supervisory Board of GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft has appointed Martine Snels to GEA’s Executive Board with effect from the beginning of October 2017. She will assume responsibility for GEA’s regions and countries organisation. Following her appointment, GEA will be headed by an Executive Board consisting of five members.

The Austrian company Next Generation Recyclingmaschinen GmbH (NGR) develops and manufactures plastics recycling equipment for industrial and consumer waste. As part of the reopening of the three year-old Customer Care Center in Taicang, NGR is expanding its sales activities in China and Southeast Asia.

Economic and demographic trends are key determinants of packaging market growth within any particular country. As an economy and real personal disposable incomes grow, then so too does consumer demand for packaged products. In its new report, The Future of Rigid Plastic Packaging to 2022, Smithers Pira’s critical analysis of the key drivers shaping this segment show that the global rigid plastic packaging consumption is projected at 52.9 million tonnes in 2017 and is forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 3.7% to 63.4 million tonnes. Meanwhile materials used to produce rigid plastic packaging are valued at $166.3 billion in 2017 and are forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 4.2% to $204.5 billion.

Carbios, a green chemistry company specialising in enzymatic bioprocesses applied to plastic and textile polymers, and TechnipFMC, a leading company in the fields of energy, chemistry and bio-sourced industries, announce the launch of a project for the industrial development of Carbios PET enzymatic recycling process. This will allow to produce virgin PET from plastic waste. This contract covers assistance to Carbios for the scale up of its process to ensure industrial competitiveness.

Alpla, a global provider of plastic packaging, has acquired a 100 per cent stake in the Italian company Propack Srl. The company, based in Ostellato (FE), is specialised in the production of HDPE and PET bottles for home-care. The agreement has been signed in mid June. The deal is expected to be concluded by the middle of July 2017. With this acquisition, the eighth plant in the country, Alpla has expanded its production capacities in the North-East of Italy.

The KHS Group has ratified its successful development of the previous year and again boosted its turnover, with sales totaling €1.18 billion last year. Its operating profit (EBT) rose thanks to contributions from internal improvement programs to this end. Petainer has launched a stand-alone business in Brazil as part of its growth strategy for the Latin American region. Carbios, a company in the field of bioplasturgy, announces that it has taken a new step forward with the production of PET oligomers made out of terephthalic acid coming from its biorecycling process of PET plastic bottles.

Sidel has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its Aseptic Combi Predis FMa blow fill seal filler following tests run at a dairy customer in North America. This means that the Sidel Aseptic Combi Predis FMa PET filler is validated for low acid manufacturing and commercial distribution in the United States market. The Sidel Aseptic blow fill seal solution is the world’s first aseptic PET filling equipment with dry preform sterilisation approved by FDA.

PolyOne Corporation, a provider of specialised polymer materials, services and solutions, today announced two internal executive appointments. Mark Crist will serve as president of Color, Additives & Inks, and J. Scott Horn, Jr. will become president of PolyOne Distribution (POD), effective July 3, 2017. Mr. Crist replaces John Van Hulle, who is retiring from PolyOne.

The standalone facility is located approximately 30 miles north of Milwaukee. This plant is just over 100,000 sq. ft. and supplies six layer bottles to Gehl Foods for aseptic filling in the food and dairy category.

Avery Dennison announced today the appointment of Noel Kasmi as Senior Director, sales for Label and Packaging Materials Europe. In this role he will be part of the leadership team of Label and Graphic Materials Europe.

The manufacturer of recycling systems is relying on new production processes with the optimum use of resources in its production of assembly groups. The new approach enables reduced production lead times for the individual assembly groups, such as melt filters and pelletisers, while at the same time increasing product quality.

The Clasper bottle engineered by Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) is a combination of two polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers and a shrink label. The first commercialisation of this new technology was the recent introduction of Yumix portable, shelf-stable line of cocktails. The bottom holds 50ml of premium alcohol and features a heat-applied aluminum-foil seal.

The Starlinger recoStar PET bottle-to-bottle recycling line which has been installed in April 2016 in the plastics recycling facility of the Canadian water bottler Ice River Springs in Feversham, Ontario, is said to deliver excellent production results.

The objective of these regional spin-offs is to address the beverage, dairy, liquid-food sectors and their respective packaging industries in a more demand-oriented manner.

Amcor has been awarded three times by the 2017 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation. The global packaging company received a gold award in the Technological Advancement and Responsible Packaging categories for its Vento coffee packaging; silver for the 20-ounce Vitaminwater bottle in the Responsible Packaging category; and – in partnership with Crown Holdings Inc. – a gold award for Peelfit in the Technological Advancement and Responsible Packaging categories.

Following tests on the Nature MultiPack the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) has confirmed that it can be fully recycled. The adhesive specially developed and supplied by NMP Systems and KHS has thus been granted interim approval for further market tests in Europe until June 30, 2019. The adhesive on the unique Nature MultiPack packaging system has no adverse effect on the rPET. Further tests shall be run to enable permanent approval to be granted.

Integrated packaging solutions leader Pro Mach, Inc. announced it has acquired global high-speed labelling solutions provider P.E. Labellers SpA. The addition of Italy-based P.E. Labellers is intended to expand Pro Mach’s capabilities to provide high-speed decorative labelling and integrated solutions worldwide. All global subsidiaries and management teams of P.E. Labellers join the Pro Mach team. Bruno Negri, co-founder and Chairman of the Board of P.E. Labellers, along with Nicola Schinelli, Vice Chairman of P.E. Labellers, will continue to lead the P.E. The City of Buenos Aires, in partnership with San Diego-based CP Group, opened an advanced recycling system in Argentina. The new 10 TPH residential single stream recycling system began running last October in Villa Soldati, a neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Since then it has helped the city achieve its sustainability goals.

Spectra have reported an increase in customers using their Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials for their packaging. The company has made great strides in providing environmental alternatives for brands seeking a sustainable outcome, with PCR orders growing rapidly according to Gavin Chenery, Commercial Director at Spectra.

Amut Ecotech, Recycling Division of Amut Group, has supplied for Edwa city of Minya Governorate, Egypt a municipal solid waste recycling facility for the management of recyclable materials. The plant is planned to go into operation by June 2017.

Greiner Packaging is establishing a joint venture with the Russian company Plastic System which serves the market under the Souzpromplast brand. Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. Amcor Rigid Plastics expands its relationship with long-time customer Campbell Soup Co. with the opening of an on-site bottle manufacturing operation in Paris, Texas, USA. Amcor’s new in-line operation is expected to produce approximately 50 million hot-fillable PET bottles each year.

Gebo Cermex, part of the Sidel Group and a leader in packaging line engineering solutions, is introducing its latest advanced performance systems and packaging line solutions at Interpack 2017 (4-10 May). The “House of Krones” will be built at interpack in Düsseldorf virtually at least. Americk Packaging has invested into a new dedicated facility offering a group resource located at its Wigan UK plant. The Innovation Centre covers all divisions of Americk Packaging which has recently been acquired by Saica Group.

The Thai Beverage Public Company Limited (“Thai Beverage”) is one of the largest beverage companies in Thailand and the ASEAN region. Thai Beverage has decided to set up its own PET-preform production and, as a result, its subsidiary BevTech Co., Ltd. invested PET-Line machine technology from Netstal. The contract signing ceremony took place in Bangkok.

The Logoplaste Vimágua water bottle has been awarded with the iF Design Award in the category “Packaging Design / Beverages”. Each year, Germany’s oldest independent design organisation, Hannover-based iF International Forum Design GmbH, organises the iF Design Award. This year’s award ceremony took place in the BMW Welt in Munich, Germany, on March 10, 2017.

According to a research from Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC), bottled water passed a major milestone in 2016, when it surpassed carbonated soft drinks to become the largest beverage category by volume in the United States. Total bottled water volume grew from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015 to 12.8 billion gallons in 2016, an increase of nearly 9%, which marked the third year in a row of accelerating growth.

Constantia Flexibles Group is optimising its film-based flexible packaging, manufacturing footprint in Europe by closing down its plant in Bucharest in Romania. The closure is expected to be finalised by July 2017 and will affect about 90 employees.

Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) is partnering with the global learning platform for packaging professionals “The Packaging School”, Clemson University, to help packaging and plastics professionals enhance their PET knowledge via an online educational platform.

Danone and Nestlé Waters have joined forces with Origin Materials, a startup based in Sacramento, California, to form the NaturALL Bottle Alliance. Together, the three partners aim to develop and launch at commercial scale a PET plastic bottle made from bio-based material, i.e. 100% sustainable and renewable resources. The project uses biomass feedstocks, such as previously used cardboard and sawdust, so it does not divert resources or land from food production for human or animal consumption.

Egg producer Hickman’s Family Farms from Arizona, USA, introduces a clear rPET egg container. Made entirely from post-consumer PET soda and water bottles at Global Plastics in California, every day millions of water soda and bottles are ground, washed, and formed into containers for Hickman’s Family Farms. It takes about five bottles to make an 18-count egg container, and about three bottles to make a 12-count egg container. Consumers love being able to see the eggs they are buying without opening the packages, and store personnel are happy about the reduction in egg breakage and packages damaged from being handled.

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) announced that its Machinery Safety Standards Committee has published the new voluntary standard establishing requirements for the manufacture and use of injection moulding machines. The new standard aligns well with the European and draft ISO standards on this subject, making it easier for American manufacturers to compete with their counterparts abroad.

Cold Jet, producer of dry ice cleaning and production system solutions, moved into its new technology center in Weinsheim, Germany. The new 640m² building is constructed on a space of 3,000m². The building is designed for future expansion by the possibility of adding more modules. The new office houses sales, service, training, marketing and administration for the regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, allowing for more synergy.

On February 1, 160 delegates from the entire PET value chain from Europe and beyond convened in Brussels for the annual Petcore Europe Conference 2017.

Processing Technologies International (PTi) has released the findings of an independent study which reaffirms FDA guidelines for the use of virgin PET cap layers as functional barriers over post-consumer recycled non-letter of no objection (hereinafter referred to as PCR) PET flake materials for direct food packaging use at room temperature. The study, which was completed in conjunction with Plastic Technologies Inc., Holland, Ohio, and Container Science Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, found that a 1-mil-thick virgin PET cap layer meets the necessary functional barrier requirements, eliminating surface contaminates within multilayer food packages made of PCR PET materials for room temperature (70°F/21°C) applications.

The demand for plastic bottles continues to grow across numerous products and sectors, including home goods, personal care, beverages, food and pharmaceuticals. With the industry slated to grow 4.6% annually over the next five years, bottling has become one of the fastest growing industry segments in plastics manufacturing. Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) recognized this trend and is adding a new exhibit space - the Bottle Zone - at NPE2018, taking place May 7-11, 2018 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, USA.

On February 7, the EU published a commission decision terminating an expiry review of the anti-dumping measures applicable to imports of certain PET originating in the People's Republic of China. According to the European Commission, a further investigation on the 13-year-long trade remedy measures has not brought to light any considerations showing that such termination would be against the Union interest. Therefore the Commission considered that the present review proceeding should be terminated.

Plastic beverage bottles will find a new life in a new $62 million plant being built in Dallas, USA, as CarbonLite gets ready to add a second facility to process 100 million pounds of post-consumer PET plastic bottles with the use of 100% green power. Construction is underway in a brand new 230,000-square-foot facility located in the City of Dallas. Start-up is planned for the end of the second quarter 2017, according to Leon Farahnik, chairman and CEO of CarbonLite.

By creating a PETG alternative to traditional wine bottles, which are not only functional but are also designed to fit through a conventional letterbox, the brand Garçon Wines, based in London, UK, is opening up a new way to have wine delivered at home. Thanks to a unique shape, the 75cl bottles fit conveniently through a letterbox. Being made from PETG, they are also tough enough to withstand the delivery process.

The Procter & Gamble Company announced that Head & Shoulders (H&S) will produce the world’s first recyclable shampoo bottle made from up to 25% recycled beach plastic. In partnership with recycling experts TerraCycle and SUEZ, this innovation will come to France this summer as a limited-edition H&S bottle available to consumers in Carrefour. This will be the world’s largest production run of recyclable bottles made with post-consumer recycled (PCR) beach plastic, and a first major step in establishing a unique supply chain that involves the support of thousands of volunteers and hundreds of NGOs collecting plastic waste found on beaches.

Mr Vimal Kedia, Managing Director, Manjushree Technopack has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award at the maiden The Economic Times (Polymers) Awards 2017. He was recognised for his achievements as an entrepreneur and his contribution to the development of the plastic packaging industry in India, spanning over three decades.

Petainer has announced that it has appointed Crusader as its UK distributor for petainerKeg. Brett Lamont, Sales Director Distribution at Petainer said: “The appointment of Crusader as our UK distributor is another important step in building our global network of distribution partners for our products. Alpla,a provider of plastic packaging, has acquired a 100 per cent stake in the Romanian company Star East Pet SRL. The company, based in Brasov, specialises in the production of PET preforms for drinks, food and non-food products.

With the recent expiry of their business relationship with Ferromatik Milacron Benelux BV, Milacron has announced a comprehensive direct sales and service infrastructure for the Benelux market to be in place since January 1, 2017.

With immediate effect the KHS Group’s production sites are now certified according to the new, revised ISO 9001:2015 standard. The current 2015 standard replaces the ISO 9001:2008 norm previously in widespread use. The KHS factory in Ahmedabad in India has been awarded the certificate for the first time.

Resource Management Group (RMG), a San Diego-based materials management and recycling services provider, recently opened a new material recovery facility (MRF). International Beverages Private Limited, a division of The Coca Cola Company, inaugurated a new plant in Bangladesh as part of a planned $74 million investment in the country on January 18. Coca-Cola previously announced investments in Bangladesh of $74 million through 2020. Additional investments have supported infrastructure improvements, route-to-market enhancements and marketing programs.

The producer of bottling plants and packaging machines SMI is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The group’s origins date back to the mid-‘70s, when Luigi Nava set up a machine shop in San Pellegrino Terme, Italy. In the beginning the activity of the craftsman’s small enterprise was dedicated to machine finishings for third parties. Some years later this activity was enlarged to include the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment employed in the bottling and packaging lines of the beverage industry.

This year’s Asia's No. 1 plastics and rubber trade fair, is an end-user-oriented trade fair focusing on "Intelligent Manufacturing, High-tech Materials and Green Solutions". It will take place from May 16-19, 2017 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex, Pazhou, Guangzhou, PR China.

More than 40 industry leaders have endorsed a new action plan to tackle global plastics issues, and have begun working together to create a more effective global system for plastics. The action plan is presented in The New Plastics Economy: Catalysing action, a new study by the World Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation with analytical support from SYSTEMIQ, which reveals that concerted action by industry could result in reuse and recycling of 70% of all global plastic packaging, up from today's recycling rate of just 14%.

Agthia Group, a food and beverage group in the UAE, has signed a purchase agreement for 100% of the shares in the water business of Delta Marketing Company, based in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia producing “Al Ain” brand water. The transaction is expected to be completed by Quarter 1, 2017, following regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Unilever committed to ensuring that all of its plastic packaging is fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 as it called on the entire fast-moving consumer goods industry to accelerate progress towards the circular economy.

Global sensor-based solutions provider Tomra has signed up as a member of the New Plastics Economy, a three-year initiative working towards a global plastics system guided by the principles of the circular economy.

The US Californian company Stacktek is featuring a wine packaging solution engineered to emulate the look and feel of glass while offering portable convenience, portion control and ease. StackTek consists of four pre-filled, stemless 'glasses' that snap together to form the equivalent of a traditional 750ml bottle of wine.

With over 1.8 million tonnes of collected and recycled PET bottles, the 2015 European PET collection and recycling volumes have increased by 5% compared to 2014. This means that nearly 59% of all bottles placed in the European market have been collected for recycling in 2015, outlining an increase of 2% points compared to the 2014 collection rate.

With the development of the production technology for woven plastic sacks made from rPET, Starlinger & Co. GmbH now offers the opportunity of closed-loop production for this type of packaging. As Stéphane Soudais, Head of Starlinger’s Consumer Bags Division points out, the company can produce PET tape fabric from virgin PET and recycled PET pellets on their machines for a variety of packaging applications since several years. Now they have achieved a breakthrough in working with recycled PET: they can produce rPET tapes directly from PET bottle flakes.

As of January 1, 2017, Mr Christian Kapsamer, formerly of Husky Injection Molding Systems, will join Agr International as the Regional Director, Agr Northwestern Europe. In this role, Mr Kapsamer will head a newly established regional sales territory that was created to address continued growth and increased demand for Agr products in North and Western Europe. This new region includes Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, the Nordic countries and some of the surrounding areas.
