Sustainable technology company Anellotech states that it recently achieved new milestones at its TCat-8 pilot plant in Texas, USA, thereby progressing its 100% bio-based bottle collaboration with global consumer beverage company Suntory. Anellotech’s TCat-8 pilot plant is using Bio-TCat technology, a thermal catalytic process which converts non-food biomass feedstock material into BTX aromatics, a group of renewable chemicals identical to their petro-based counterparts. The first shipment of BTX has now been sent to joint development partners IFPEN and Axens for purification studies to make bio-paraxylene – the key aromatic chemical needed to make 100% renewable beverage bottles a reality. Bio-paraxylene from TCat-8 will be used to make renewable PET resin for prototype bottle manufacture and product testing.

Anellotech, a sustainable technology company pioneering the Bio-TCat process for production of cost-competitive renewable chemicals and fuels from non-food biomass, announced a key operating milestone, achieving two weeks of continuous operation of its seven-story tall TCat-8 pilot plant, producing aromatics (primarily benzene, toluene, and xylenes) from loblolly pine feedstock. Anellotech also secured an additional $6 million investment from Suntory Holdings Limited, which was part of a previously announced $15 million package. Suntory’s total investment in Anellotech’s program is now more than $30 million.

Speciality chemical company Croda International Plc announced that one of its latest innovations, Incroslip SL, has been granted approval for use as an additive in the manufacture of polyolefin plastic materials and articles that come into contact with food according to Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 as amended. This latest update now allows the product to be used in polyolefin food applications such as packaging films, moulding and caps.

Clariant launched the Senseaction line of colour masterbatches intended for use in the production of caps and closures used on bottled water packaging. Senseaction masterbatches, which are available in a wide range of colours, are specially formulated, processed, tested, and certified to be free of detectable negative organoleptic (taste and odor) effects.

September 14, 2017 | PET flake sorting station

Drinktec Sesotec, Hall A4 - Stand 306 At the Drinktec, Sesotec GmbH presents itself for the first time as a supplier of complete sorting stations for PET flake recycling. The revised Flake Purifier+ multi-sensor sorting system will be the company’s highlight.

Drinktec Moretto, Hall C1 - Booth 622 Moisture Meter in-line resin moisture analyser is Moretto’s latest product for the PET market. The company claims that it is the only device currently available that can assure an accurate, online measurement of residual PET granule moisture. The machine verifies residual granule moisture content in few seconds, which enables polymer quality to be ascertained and confirmed before processing.

Drinktec Milliken will demonstrate how its ClearShield Colorless UV Absorbers can bring value to PET packaging by protecting UV-sensitive contents from degradation while maintaining the material’s clarity and transparency. ClearShield is intended to protect beverages and other UV-sensitive contents against harmful light exposure by incorporating the UV blocker into the PET package itself. These absorbers filter 95% of UV light at up to 390 nanometers and are effective at low loadings, enabling the use of more highly UV-sensitive natural colourants in the packaged products.

Drinktec Repi, Hall A4 - Stand 500 Repi, multinational producer of liquid colours and additives for plastics, will present its focus on plastic packaging applications. If flexibility, product safety, sustainability and ease of operation are the key words for the packaging industry, then Repi claims to be on track.

Economic and demographic trends are key determinants of packaging market growth within any particular country. As an economy and real personal disposable incomes grow, then so too does consumer demand for packaged products. In its new report, The Future of Rigid Plastic Packaging to 2022, Smithers Pira’s critical analysis of the key drivers shaping this segment show that the global rigid plastic packaging consumption is projected at 52.9 million tonnes in 2017 and is forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 3.7% to 63.4 million tonnes. Meanwhile materials used to produce rigid plastic packaging are valued at $166.3 billion in 2017 and are forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 4.2% to $204.5 billion.

Carbios, a green chemistry company specialising in enzymatic bioprocesses applied to plastic and textile polymers, and TechnipFMC, a leading company in the fields of energy, chemistry and bio-sourced industries, announce the launch of a project for the industrial development of Carbios PET enzymatic recycling process.
