The Erema Group closed the 2017/18 fiscal year at the end of March with double-digit growth of over 10 per cent. The companies integrated in the Group have once again achieved a new turnover record with consolidated sales reaching 155 million euros for the first time.

Husky has taken the step of combining its Beverage Packaging business and Specialty Packaging business under one new consolidated business called Rigid Packaging. Amcor has announced the expansion of its injection blow molding (IBM) and extrusion blow molding (EBM) capabilities for the production of healthcare, food and home and personal care packaging. The company has invested in the Jet series all-electric IBM platform from Meccanoplastica Group, Florence, Italy and the KBB series all-electric EBM platform from Kautex Maschinenbau, Bonn, Germany.

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS), producers of NPE2018: The Plastics Show announced a 100-percent waste diversion goal for this year’s NPE, which will welcome more than 65,000 plastics professionals to the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in Orlando, (Fl) from May 7-11, 2018. Anellotech, a sustainable technology company pioneering the Bio-TCat process for production of cost-competitive renewable chemicals and fuels from non-food biomass, announced a key operating milestone, achieving two weeks of continuous operation of its seven-story tall TCat-8 pilot plant, producing aromatics (primarily benzene, toluene, and xylenes) from loblolly pine feedstock. Anellotech also secured an additional $6 million investment from Suntory Holdings Limited, which was part of a previously announced $15 million package. Suntory’s total investment in Anellotech’s program is now more than $30 million.

Amut and Erema are holding an Open House to present a sophisticated "Bottle to Packaging" process from 28 to 31 May 2018. Washed post-consumer PET bottle flakes will be recycled live at the AMUT headquarters in Novara, Italy, to make food contact grade thermoforming sheet in a direct process. This rPET sheet will be used at the Plast Milan exhibition – which is being held at the same time – to make thermoformed trays for the food sector. Interested producers will be able to process their own input material on the demonstration system in future to make plastic rolls. They can then test the samples later in their own thermoforming production to check the quality.

Unilever has announced a partnership with the start-up company Ioniqa and the global producer of PET resins Indorama Ventures to pioneer a new technology which converts PET waste back into vergin grade material for use in food packaging.

Corpus Christi Polymers LLC (“CC Polymers”) - a newly formed joint venture between Alpek, S.A.B. de C.V. (“Alpek”), Indorama Ventures Holdings LP (“Indorama”) a subsidiary of Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited, and Far Eastern Investment (Holding) Ltd. (“Far Eastern”) - has entered into an asset purchase agreement with M&G USA Corp. and its affiliated debtors (“M&G”). CC Polymers will acquire the integrated PTA-PET plant currently under construction in Corpus Christi, Texas, certain M&G intellectual property, and a desalination/boiler plant providing water and steam needs to the Corpus Christi Project. The purchase agreement provides M&G with a binding bid of $1.125 billion in cash and other capital contributions.

Commitment to sustainable packaging - Waste Free Oceans has announced a new partnership with Henkel to remove plastic waste from oceans and rivers – and transform it into over a million bottles used for the Lovables laundry brand. The collaboration is the largest that WFO has agreed so far and will run for at least three years. Together, the partners aim to remove enough plastic from rivers, lakes, seas and oceans to produce 100 tonnes of usable recycled material each year.

PET pellets from post-consumer drink bottles provided by PET Recycling Team GmbH, a subsidiary of Alpla, result in greenhouse gas emissions that are only a tenth of the level for new material. This has been confirmed in a recent investigation. Last year, PET Recycling Team (PRT) in Wöllersdorf, Lower Austria, obtained a measurement of the environmental impact of recycled PET (rPET) produced in-house. The calculated value was a carbon dioxide equivalent of 0.45kg for every kilogram of material produced. A new calculation by c7-consult takes into account the now optimised power mix, resulting in a carbon dioxide equivalent of just 0.21kg.

At the trade fair Beviale Moscow, held from 27 February to 1 March 2018, 146 exhibitors (2017: 130) showed their products and solutions relating to beverage manufacture and marketing to more than 5,300 visitors (2017: 4,000), in an exhibition area of about 2,000 square metres (2017: 1,600). New elements this time were the programme points covering wine and soft drinks, which were very positively received.

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global chemical producer, has announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire M&G Polimeros Brazil S.A. in Ipojuca Brazil. The plant is the largest PET facility in Brazil, with capacity of 550,000t/a. This plant is strategically located and benefits from virtual integration with a manufacturer of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), a key feedstock to PET. The transaction is expected to be completed in second quarter 2018, subject to regulatory approvals.

A pioneer since 1979 and now a leading bottled water provider in the Gulf area, Emirates Natural Drinking Water has selected Sacmi to complete a recent investment decision aimed at expanding production further. Sacmi is supplying a complete filling line to replace the existing plant. The goal is to raise output capacity from the current 15,000 cases of water a day to 23,000. The new Sacmi line has been designed to produce small-medium formats (500ml or smaller) at output rates of 34,000 bottles/hour (500ml format).

Speciality chemical company Croda International Plc announced that one of its latest innovations, Incroslip SL, has been granted approval for use as an additive in the manufacture of polyolefin plastic materials and articles that come into contact with food according to Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 as amended. Today Holland Colours announces that Mr Coenraad Vinke (54) has been nominated as the new CEO, producer of colour concentrates for the polymer industry. He will join the company on the 1st of May. He will succeed Rob Harmsen, who has been in charge since January 2012. Coen Vinke will be officially appointed by the Shareholders Meeting, for which meeting further details will follow.

Poland’s mineral water bottler Naleczów Zdrój S.A. is well known for the purity of its best-selling brand Cisowianka, sourced from pristine aquifers near its plant in the southeastern village of Drzewce. Petcore Europe has created the new Plastic Aerosol Recycling Special Industry Group (SiG) in order to anticipate the need to recycle higher amounts of plastic aerosols. This industry task force is therefore looking for ways to increase the recycling volumes of PET products from the household packaging waste stream.

Coca-Cola announced the goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle or can it sells globally by 2030. The company and its global network of bottling partners will tackle the ambitious goal, which is part of a holistic plan called “World Without Waste,” through a renewed focus on the entire packaging lifecycle – from how bottles and cans are designed and made, to how they’re recycled and repurposed.

Amcor has proven its LiquiForm technology with the commercialisation of the first consumer package. Amcor partnered with Greenblendz, a Michigan-based co-packer and developer of private label, environmentally-friendly consumer products, to develop and commercialise packaging for the Nature’s Promise brand of hand soap. Amcor produced the 12oz PET bottle on a proprietary Amcor-built machine powered by the LiquiForm process. The new machine is the industry’s first manufacturing unit to successfully utilise the LiquiForm technology.

Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, acknowledges the investment by chemical industry peer and partner Sabic, which has acquired a 24.99% stake in Clariant. Bonaqua, the spring water of The Coca-Cola Company in Argentina has traditionally been bottled in a premium glass bottle for the on-premise market. For the water running a truck travel for more than 700km to its main market, the company was keen to create a premium glass-like PET bottle proposed to meet the long-haul trip in a huge country.

GEA completed the acquisition of Vipoll, headquartered in Križevci pri Ljutomeru, Slovenia, which was signed in November 2017. Ettlinger announced today that they have been acquired by the Swiss Company Maag, a business unit of Dover Corporation. Ettlinger Kunststoffmaschinen GmbH was founded in 1983 and is today a globally recognised brand. The German company has its headquarters in Königsbrunn, near Augsburg and an American sales and service subsidiary in Atlanta, Georgia. Its core expertise is the development and manufacture of high performance continuous melt filters and injection moulding machines.

For many years, the PP*STAR, a pinch bottom bag produced on Starlinger machinery, has been known as a robust and attractive packaging solution for products such as dry pet food, fertiliser, sugar, flour, or rice. Since early 2017, the PP*STAR can be manufactured directly from PET bottle flakes, turning it into the rPET PP*STAR. This sustainable concept has recently been awarded two prizes.

Nestlé Waters NA has identified Centre County as a potential location for its third Pennsylvania bottling facility. The Centre County region is currently a leading candidate for a proposed $50 million bottling facility that would create an estimated 50 manufacturing jobs. Nestlé Waters’ search for a new factory location is driven by growing consumer demand for bottled water, which in 2017 surpassed soda as the most popular beverage in the United States. As part of the company’s regional spring water model, the proposed factory would bottle Deer Park 100% Natural Spring Water for distribution to customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

Out of 3.147.000 tonnes of PET bottles and containers placed in the European market in 2016, a remarkable number of 59.8% - in total 1.880.900 tonnes - were collected and thereof 1.773.200 tonnes mechanically recycled. These conclusions come from the annual PCI Wood Mackenzie PET recycle survey for West Europe in 2016, commissioned by Petcore Europe. It shows that the collection rates increased by 7.4%, while the recycling rates also grew by 7.3%. In 2016, that resulted in 129.400 tonnes more collected and 120.000 tonnes more recycled PET compared to 2014.

North American shipments of primary plastics machinery posted a strong year-over-year increase in Q3 of 2017 according to statistics compiled and reported by the Plastics Industry Association’s (PLASTICS) Committee on Equipment Statistics (CES). Chem-Trend – a developer of release agents, mould maintenance products and purging compounds – said switching to Ultra Purge can boost efficiency in industrial packaging injection moulding processes and reduce costs.

A leading firm in the Vietnamese beverage sector has purchased two complete preform inspection solutions from Sacmi. Each inspection unit consists of an advanced PVS-3 - the vision system recently developed by Sacmi's Automation & Inspection System Division - and comes with an automatic centrifuge positioner upstream.

The recently launched Jack Body Wash – part of actor Richard E Grant’s Jack Perfume range - utilises the popular 500ml Flat Based Boston Round design in PET from Spectra Packaging’s range of standards.

Clariant launched the Senseaction line of colour masterbatches intended for use in the production of caps and closures used on bottled water packaging. Senseaction masterbatches, which are available in a wide range of colours, are specially formulated, processed, tested, and certified to be free of detectable negative organoleptic (taste and odor) effects.

Nestlé Waters Iran has been signing a first-of-its-kind partnership with the Institute for Environmental Research at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, to reduce the impact of PET bottles. The 12-month project is intended to help to understand the current PET waste landscape in Iran, before jointly developing an action plan with various stakeholders, such as environmental protection agencies and consumers, to improve the management, collection rates and recycling of PET waste in the country.

The market research institute Ceresana has analysed the European market for rigid plastic containers. In many applications, plastics replace other materials such as glass or metal: Ceresana forecasts the European sales of plastic containers to reach a volume of more than 12.4 million tonnes in 2024.

At this year's edition of the "dynamic days" held October 23-24, 2017 in Weissenbach, Lower Austria, Starlinger inaugurated the new headquarters of its division recycling technology. The building is located in close proximity to the existing Starlinger factory.

Maag, a worldwide-leading manufacturer of gear pumps, pelletising systems, filtration systems and pulverisers for use in the plastics, chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, announced the opening of two new facilities in the Jiading District of Shanghai and in the city of Guangzhou that will serve the Chinese market.

The 2018 edition of the Global Blow Moulding Congress will take place on June, 18-20, 2017 in Cologne, Germany. Conference Chairman Noru Tsalic explains: “This is the only international conference focusing on technical and commercial developments in plastic bottles and containers: design, manufacturing, filling and end-of-life stewardship."

November 13, 2017 | R&D/Leverage Open House

The R&D/Leverage open house event included presentations on trends and developments in packaging design and mould manufacturing. Almost 50 attendees from global converters to brand owners attended the three day event, ran from September 20-22. The theme was "Breaking Down the Silos in Plastic Packaging" where R&D demonstrated that working with design, engineering, and manufacturing early in the planning process, fosters innovation and cost efficiency.

On 1 November 2017, Otto Hofstetter AG, the manufacturer of moulds for PET preforms and the packaging industry, opened a branch office in Luxembourg. With this new office, the family-owned company from Uznach, Switzerland, is expanding its international presence and increasing its proximity to its customers in the EU.

Alpha Packaging Inc. announced that it has acquired a plant in Etten-Leur, the Netherlands, from Graham Packaging Company. The transaction – for which terms were not disclosed – was completed on November 2nd. Alpha, with headquater in St. Louis, Missouri USA, is a blow moulder of bottles and jars for the growing consumer markets, including the nutrition, pharmaceutical, personal care and niche food and beverage categories.

The first ever drink technology India in New Delhi got off to a flying start: the regional spin-off of the trade fair for the Indian beverage, dairy and liquid-food industry, together with the partner events of Messe Düsseldorf, occupied 11,000 square meters of floor space at the Pragati Maidan exhibition center in New Delhi during its debut event. Dr Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy CEO of Messe München, was impressed with the event: “We’re thrilled that the premiere here in New Delhi was so popular with our exhibitors and visitors. Gebo Cermex, part of the Sidel Group, has recently signed a supply agreement with Kuka AG. The contract was finalised in Munich at Drinktec 2017. Putting pen to paper for the agreement, were signatories Mr. Marc Aury, President and Managing Director of Gebo Cermex and Mr. Joachim Melis, VP Division Consumer Industries & Handling of Kuka, representing the German manufacturer.

Constantia Flexibles has successfully completed the sale of its Labels division to Multi-Color Corporation for an enterprise value of approximately €1.15 billion ($1.3 billion). All required regulatory authorities have cleared the transaction. Constantia Flexibles has received approximately €830 million in cash and will continue to participate in the future success story of Multi-Color through a 16.6% shareholding.

The new European project on chemical recycling DEMETO is officially launched. DEMETO aims at enabling chemical de-polymerisation of PET at industrial scale based on its microwave-based process intensification, focusing as a start on coloured bottles waste.

The amount of materials used to make polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, and glass bottled water containers has been reduced by 42.8 percent between 2007 and 2015, according to a new study. The Quantis Life Cycle Inventory and Environmental Footprint of Bottled Water for the North American Market study found the total grams of bottle material per gallon of bottled water (excluding labels and caps) has been reduced from 129 grams in 2007 to just 73.9 grams in 2015.

Nestlé Waters has announced that it will strengthen its collaboration with the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) to certify 20 factories by 2020. Nestlé Waters has already certified four bottling facilities in Sheikhupura, Pakistan, and in California (Ontario, Sacramento and Livermore). It plans to certify additional sites in Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

In May 2017, the European Plastics Converters Association (EuPC) launched a European survey on the current and future use of recycled plastics materials (rPM) in the Europe’s plastics converting industry. Following a period of 5 months during which 485 participants from 28 different countries filled in the online questionnaire, EuPC now presented the results of the survey to its members.

With over 76,000 visitors from more than 170 countries, drinktec has chalked up the best-ever result in its 66-year history. The number of visitors rose by 10,000 over the previous event in 2013. In particular at the international level, the trade fair was able to grow attendance again, this time by 12%. The ratio of visitors from outside Germany thus rose to 67%. The number of exhibitors increased to 1,749 from 80 countries. Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) announced today that Russell Broome will step down as Managing Director. Drinktec Vipoll Hall A2 - Booth 303 The Slovenian specialist in filling plants, Vipoll, will be presenting a world premiere with its "All-in-One" combined rinser/filler/capper block for glass and PET bottles as well as cans. The "VISITRON VKR-E 32-32-4K/4D" is able to process 9,500 330ml cans and 330ml bottles per hour. The system is suitable for carbonated and still drinks such as beer, soft drinks, wine or juice.

Recycled PET (rPET) from PET Recycling Team GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alpla based in Wöllersdorf/Lower Austria, results in 79% lower CO2 emissions compared to new material. This is a significantly higher saving than previously assumed. A study conducted by denkstatt GmbH on behalf of Alpla came to this conclusion.

Pretium Packaging, a North American manufacturer of plastic containers and closures, using technology from Practically Impossible Labs, Houston, Texas, has developed a 64-ounce, 38-400 mm finish, stock PET container with an integrated handle.

Movacolor, developer and manufacturer of high quality dosing systems for the plastics industry, is going to build a new building in its current location Sneek, The Netherlands. It is expected that the international company will move to the fully energy-neutral building in the third quarter of 2018. The 100% sustainable building will include solar panels, top cooling in the entire building, underfloor heating and heat pumps. Of course, charging stations for electric cars are provided.

Italian company ACMI installed a complete packaging line for PET bottles able to handle round and square bottles at Ferrarelle SpA. The rated filling speed is 40,000 bottles per hour for round formats and 36,000 for two litre square formats.

Drinktec Tech Long, Hall B5 - Stand 322 At Drinktec 2017 Tech Long will introduce its G5, Generation 5, blow moulding machines to the European market. The G5 machines are available in formats from four to 36 cavities, with a blowing rate of 2250 to 2400 standard bottles per hour per cavity, and with the capability to blow any PET container from 0,2l to 20 litre.

At around three months before the start of drink technology India (dti), the event is attracting strong interest from exhibitors. Over 90 percent of the available exhibition space is booked. Which means the event is approaching full capacity. Among the companies that have signed up to exhibit are leading names in the sector, for example, ACE Technologies, Anton Paar, Chemco Group, Krome Dispense, Repute Engineers, R J Brewing and The Brewmaster.

Holland Colours is launching Holcopearl 2287 for PET packaging. The polymer-based product is intended to deliver deep colours with optimal dispersion on automated lines running at high speeds. “The idea to develop Holcopearl came from customer feedback and the trends we see in the industry and among our customers and their customers,” says Wilfried Grob, Sales & Marketing Manager Europe at Holland Colours. Among these trends are the moves to higher production speeds, deeper colours, more sensitive dosage settings, and the switch to spherical PET granules instead of cylindrical ones.

With the founding of the Powerfil business unit, Erema, the manufacturer of plastics recycling systems, extends its portfolio and now also offers the proven melt filter as individual components for existing extrusion plants. Technical modifications were made to the filter systems prior to the foundation of the business unit.

Drinktec Lanfranchi, Hall A6 - Stand 103 The intense R&D activities which have been a feature of Lanfranchi in recent years have led to a new result in terms of technological developments applied to unscramblers: the automatic change-over. The Unscrambler 2.0 is capable of handling a wide range of containers of different shapes and sizes.

Sesotec GmbH, a manufacturer of machines and systems for contaminant detection and material sorting for the food, plastics, and recycling industries, is growing in all segments, which correspondingly need more room. Early in July 2017 service acceptance at the company headquarters in German Schönberg therefore was relocated from Regener Straße 130 to Industriestraße 5. Drinktec Arburg, Hall A4 - Stand 323 Arburg will demonstrate at Drinktec its injection moulding technology which has been specially optimised for the packaging industry, particularly for fast sequence and high-cavity moulds. The exhibit, a packaging version of the hybrid Allrounder 570 H, has a clamping force of 1,800 kN and a size 800 injection unit. Twenty-four drink bottle caps will be produced in a cycle time of only 2.7 seconds on a high-performance mould from Z-moulds. The weight of the HDPE moulded parts is 1.25 grams. A vacuum conveyor and a direct colouring device ensure a correspondingly high throughput. Quality monitoring is carried out in-line using an optical system.

Boxmore Packaging, with headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, will become a fully owned subsidiary of the Austrian packaging specialist Alpla. Boxmore Packaging is specialised in PET preforms, PET bottles and closures, and currently employs around 1,000 members of staff at nine locations.

Drinktec And+Or, Hall A4 - Stand 202 The handle applicator SIAL6000 performs the insertion of (PP) lateral, colourable handles on PET bottles (from 2 up to 5 litres). This system allows PET bottles to be used for certain products when an easy pouring process is required.

Freudenberg claims to be Europe’s largest user of recycled PET in construction applications. The technology group has been active in recycling since the 1990s. The company’s plants in Novedrate and Pisticci Scalo, Italy, as well as in Colmar, France, recycle millions of PET bottles every day. The purified recyclate is processed into nonwovens that are used in construction, for example as substrates for bituminous waterproof membranes.

The upturn in domestic Italian packaging machinery sales has continued in the first quarter of 2017, on the heels of the two digit growth figures at the end of 2016. According to data collected by the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association Ucima, domestic sales have grown by +6.5% in the first quarter of 2017 over the same period of 2016, following the excellent +10.4% growth at the end of 2016.

The Supervisory Board of GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft has appointed Martine Snels to GEA’s Executive Board with effect from the beginning of October 2017. She will assume responsibility for GEA’s regions and countries organisation. Following her appointment, GEA will be headed by an Executive Board consisting of five members.

The Austrian company Next Generation Recyclingmaschinen GmbH (NGR) develops and manufactures plastics recycling equipment for industrial and consumer waste. As part of the reopening of the three year-old Customer Care Center in Taicang, NGR is expanding its sales activities in China and Southeast Asia.

Economic and demographic trends are key determinants of packaging market growth within any particular country. As an economy and real personal disposable incomes grow, then so too does consumer demand for packaged products. In its new report, The Future of Rigid Plastic Packaging to 2022, Smithers Pira’s critical analysis of the key drivers shaping this segment show that the global rigid plastic packaging consumption is projected at 52.9 million tonnes in 2017 and is forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 3.7% to 63.4 million tonnes. Meanwhile materials used to produce rigid plastic packaging are valued at $166.3 billion in 2017 and are forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 4.2% to $204.5 billion.

Carbios, a green chemistry company specialising in enzymatic bioprocesses applied to plastic and textile polymers, and TechnipFMC, a leading company in the fields of energy, chemistry and bio-sourced industries, announce the launch of a project for the industrial development of Carbios PET enzymatic recycling process. This will allow to produce virgin PET from plastic waste. This contract covers assistance to Carbios for the scale up of its process to ensure industrial competitiveness.

Alpla, a global provider of plastic packaging, has acquired a 100 per cent stake in the Italian company Propack Srl. The company, based in Ostellato (FE), is specialised in the production of HDPE and PET bottles for home-care. The agreement has been signed in mid June. The deal is expected to be concluded by the middle of July 2017. With this acquisition, the eighth plant in the country, Alpla has expanded its production capacities in the North-East of Italy.

The KHS Group has ratified its successful development of the previous year and again boosted its turnover, with sales totaling €1.18 billion last year. Petainer has launched a stand-alone business in Brazil as part of its growth strategy for the Latin American region. Carbios, a company in the field of bioplasturgy, announces that it has taken a new step forward with the production of PET oligomers made out of terephthalic acid coming from its biorecycling process of PET plastic bottles.

Sidel has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its Aseptic Combi Predis FMa blow fill seal filler following tests run at a dairy customer in North America. This means that the Sidel Aseptic Combi Predis FMa PET filler is validated for low acid manufacturing and commercial distribution in the United States market. The Sidel Aseptic blow fill seal solution is the world’s first aseptic PET filling equipment with dry preform sterilisation approved by FDA.

PolyOne Corporation, a provider of specialised polymer materials, services and solutions, today announced two internal executive appointments. Mark Crist will serve as president of Color, Additives & Inks, and J. Scott Horn, Jr. will become president of PolyOne Distribution (POD), effective July 3, 2017. Mr. Crist replaces John Van Hulle, who is retiring from PolyOne.

The standalone facility is located approximately 30 miles north of Milwaukee. This plant is just over 100,000 sq. ft. and supplies six layer bottles to Gehl Foods for aseptic filling in the food and dairy category.

Avery Dennison announced today the appointment of Noel Kasmi as Senior Director, sales for Label and Packaging Materials Europe. In this role he will be part of the leadership team of Label and Graphic Materials Europe.

The manufacturer of recycling systems is relying on new production processes with the optimum use of resources in its production of assembly groups. The new approach enables reduced production lead times for the individual assembly groups, such as melt filters and pelletisers, while at the same time increasing product quality.

The Clasper bottle engineered by Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) is a combination of two polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers and a shrink label. The first commercialisation of this new technology was the recent introduction of Yumix portable, shelf-stable line of cocktails. The bottom holds 50ml of premium alcohol and features a heat-applied aluminum-foil seal.

The Starlinger recoStar PET bottle-to-bottle recycling line which has been installed in April 2016 in the plastics recycling facility of the Canadian water bottler Ice River Springs in Feversham, Ontario, is said to deliver excellent production results.

drink technology India, the trade fair for the beverage, dairy and liquid-food industry in India, is switching to an annual format and will be held at various locations in the future - every two years in Mumbai, and alternating between New Delhi and Bangalore in the years in between. The objective of these regional spin-offs is to address the beverage, dairy, liquid-food sectors and their respective packaging industries in a more demand-oriented manner.

Amcor has been awarded three times by the 2017 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation. Following tests on the Nature MultiPack the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) has confirmed that it can be fully recycled. The adhesive specially developed and supplied by NMP Systems and KHS has thus been granted interim approval for further market tests in Europe until June 30, 2019. The adhesive on the unique Nature MultiPack packaging system has no adverse effect on the rPET. Further tests shall be run to enable permanent approval to be granted.

Integrated packaging solutions leader Pro Mach, Inc. announced it has acquired global high-speed labelling solutions provider P.E. Labellers SpA. The addition of Italy-based P.E. Labellers is intended to expand Pro Mach’s capabilities to provide high-speed decorative labelling and integrated solutions worldwide. All global subsidiaries and management teams of P.E. The City of Buenos Aires, in partnership with San Diego-based CP Group, opened an advanced recycling system in Argentina. The new 10 TPH residential single stream recycling system began running last October in Villa Soldati, a neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Since then it has helped the city achieve its sustainability goals.

Spectra have reported an increase in customers using their Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials for their packaging. Amut Ecotech, Recycling Division of Amut Group, has supplied for Edwa city of Minya Governorate, Egypt a municipal solid waste recycling facility for the management of recyclable materials. The plant is planned to go into operation by June 2017.

The Engel Group, headquartered in Schwertberg, Austria, has appointed Markus Richter as chief financial officer (CFO) with effect from May 1st, 2017. He succeeds Klaus Siegmund, who left Engel in March.

The “House of Krones” will be built at interpack in Düsseldorf virtually at least. With its integrated buffer system the newly developed KHS InnoDry Block permits accumulation-free, gentle pack conveying without the side guides otherwise required. The KHS InnoDry Block combines a packaging machine with a palletiser and has a handle dispenser integrated into the packer.

Americk Packaging has invested into a new dedicated facility offering a group resource located at its Wigan UK plant. The Innovation Centre covers all divisions of Americk Packaging which has recently been acquired by Saica Group.

The Thai Beverage Public Company Limited (“Thai Beverage”) is one of the largest beverage companies in Thailand and the ASEAN region. Thai Beverage has decided to set up its own PET-preform production and, as a result, its subsidiary BevTech Co., Ltd. invested PET-Line machine technology from Netstal. The contract signing ceremony took place in Bangkok.

The Logoplaste Vimágua water bottle has been awarded with the iF Design Award in the category “Packaging Design / Beverages”. Each year, Germany’s oldest independent design organisation, Hannover-based iF International Forum Design GmbH, organises the iF Design Award. This year’s award ceremony took place in the BMW Welt in Munich, Germany, on March 10, 2017.

According to a research from Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC), bottled water passed a major milestone in 2016, when it surpassed carbonated soft drinks to become the largest beverage category by volume in the United States. Total bottled water volume grew from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015 to 12.8 billion gallons in 2016, an increase of nearly 9%, which marked the third year in a row of accelerating growth.

Constantia Flexibles Group is optimising its film-based flexible packaging, manufacturing footprint in Europe by closing down its plant in Bucharest in Romania. The closure is expected to be finalised by July 2017 and will affect about 90 employees.

Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) is partnering with the global learning platform for packaging professionals “The Packaging School”, Clemson University, to help packaging and plastics professionals enhance their PET knowledge via an online educational platform.

Danone and Nestlé Waters have joined forces with Origin Materials, a startup based in Sacramento, California, to form the NaturALL Bottle Alliance. Together, the three partners aim to develop and launch at commercial scale a PET plastic bottle made from bio-based material, i.e. 100% sustainable and renewable resources. The project uses biomass feedstocks, such as previously used cardboard and sawdust, so it does not divert resources or land from food production for human or animal consumption.

Egg producer Hickman’s Family Farms from Arizona, USA, introduces a clear rPET egg container. Made entirely from post-consumer PET soda and water bottles at Global Plastics in California, every day millions of water soda and bottles are ground, washed, and formed into containers for Hickman’s Family Farms. It takes about five bottles to make an 18-count egg container, and about three bottles to make a 12-count egg container. Consumers love being able to see the eggs they are buying without opening the packages, and store personnel are happy about the reduction in egg breakage and packages damaged from being handled.

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) announced that its Machinery Safety Standards Committee has published the new voluntary standard establishing requirements for the manufacture and use of injection moulding machines. The new standard aligns well with the European and draft ISO standards on this subject, making it easier for American manufacturers to compete with their counterparts abroad.

Cold Jet, producer of dry ice cleaning and production system solutions, moved into its new technology center in Weinsheim, Germany. The new 640m² building is constructed on a space of 3,000m². The building is designed for future expansion by the possibility of adding more modules. The new office houses sales, service, training, marketing and administration for the regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, allowing for more synergy.

Processing Technologies International (PTi) has released the findings of an independent study which reaffirms FDA guidelines for the use of virgin PET cap layers as functional barriers over post-consumer recycled non-letter of no objection (hereinafter referred to as PCR) PET flake materials for direct food packaging use at room temperature. The study, which was completed in conjunction with Plastic Technologies Inc., Holland, Ohio, and Container Science Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, found that a 1-mil-thick virgin PET cap layer meets the necessary functional barrier requirements, eliminating surface contaminates within multilayer food packages made of PCR PET materials for room temperature (70°F/21°C) applications.

The demand for plastic bottles continues to grow across numerous products and sectors, including home goods, personal care, beverages, food and pharmaceuticals. With the industry slated to grow 4.6% annually over the next five years, bottling has become one of the fastest growing industry segments in plastics manufacturing. Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) recognized this trend and is adding a new exhibit space - the Bottle Zone - at NPE2018, taking place May 7-11, 2018 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, USA.

On February 7, the EU published a commission decision terminating an expiry review of the anti-dumping measures applicable to imports of certain PET originating in the People's Republic of China. According to the European Commission, a further investigation on the 13-year-long trade remedy measures has not brought to light any considerations showing that such termination would be against the Union interest. Therefore the Commission considered that the present review proceeding should be terminated.

Plastic beverage bottles will find a new life in a new $62 million plant being built in Dallas, USA, as CarbonLite gets ready to add a second facility to process 100 million pounds of post-consumer PET plastic bottles with the use of 100% green power. Construction is underway in a brand new 230,000-square-foot facility located in the City of Dallas. Start-up is planned for the end of the second quarter 2017, according to Leon Farahnik, chairman and CEO of CarbonLite.

By creating a PETG alternative to traditional wine bottles, which are not only functional but are also designed to fit through a conventional letterbox, the brand Garçon Wines, based in London, UK, is opening up a new way to have wine delivered at home. Thanks to a unique shape, the 75cl bottles fit conveniently through a letterbox. Being made from PETG, they are also tough enough to withstand the delivery process.

The Procter & Gamble Company announced that Head & Shoulders (H&S) will produce the world’s first recyclable shampoo bottle made from up to 25% recycled beach plastic. In partnership with recycling experts TerraCycle and SUEZ, this innovation will come to France this summer as a limited-edition H&S bottle available to consumers in Carrefour. This will be the world’s largest production run of recyclable bottles made with post-consumer recycled (PCR) beach plastic, and a first major step in establishing a unique supply chain that involves the support of thousands of volunteers and hundreds of NGOs collecting plastic waste found on beaches.

Mr Vimal Kedia, Managing Director, Manjushree Technopack has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award at the maiden The Economic Times (Polymers) Awards 2017. He was recognised for his achievements as an entrepreneur and his contribution to the development of the plastic packaging industry in India, spanning over three decades.

Alpla,a provider of plastic packaging, has acquired a 100 per cent stake in the Romanian company Star East Pet SRL. The company, based in Brasov, specialises in the production of PET preforms for drinks, food and non-food products.

With the recent expiry of their business relationship with Ferromatik Milacron Benelux BV, Milacron has announced a comprehensive direct sales and service infrastructure for the Benelux market to be in place since January 1, 2017.

With immediate effect the KHS Group’s production sites are now certified according to the new, revised ISO 9001:2015 standard. The current 2015 standard replaces the ISO 9001:2008 norm previously in widespread use. The KHS factory in Ahmedabad in India has been awarded the certificate for the first time.

The producer of bottling plants and packaging machines SMI is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The group’s origins date back to the mid-‘70s, when Luigi Nava set up a machine shop in San Pellegrino Terme, Italy. In the beginning the activity of the craftsman’s small enterprise was dedicated to machine finishings for third parties. Some years later this activity was enlarged to include the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment employed in the bottling and packaging lines of the beverage industry.

More than 40 industry leaders have endorsed a new action plan to tackle global plastics issues, and have begun working together to create a more effective global system for plastics. The action plan is presented in The New Plastics Economy: Catalysing action, a new study by the World Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation with analytical support from SYSTEMIQ, which reveals that concerted action by industry could result in reuse and recycling of 70% of all global plastic packaging, up from today's recycling rate of just 14%.

Agthia Group, a food and beverage group in the UAE, has signed a purchase agreement for 100% of the shares in the water business of Delta Marketing Company, based in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia producing “Al Ain” brand water. The transaction is expected to be completed by Quarter 1, 2017, following regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Unilever committed to ensuring that all of its plastic packaging is fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 as it called on the entire fast-moving consumer goods industry to accelerate progress towards the circular economy.

Global sensor-based solutions provider Tomra has signed up as a member of the New Plastics Economy, a three-year initiative working towards a global plastics system guided by the principles of the circular economy.

The US Californian company Stacktek is featuring a wine packaging solution engineered to emulate the look and feel of glass while offering portable convenience, portion control and ease. StackTek consists of four pre-filled, stemless 'glasses' that snap together to form the equivalent of a traditional 750ml bottle of wine.

With over 1.8 million tonnes of collected and recycled PET bottles, the 2015 European PET collection and recycling volumes have increased by 5% compared to 2014. This means that nearly 59% of all bottles placed in the European market have been collected for recycling in 2015, outlining an increase of 2% points compared to the 2014 collection rate.

With the development of the production technology for woven plastic sacks made from rPET, Starlinger & Co. GmbH now offers the opportunity of closed-loop production for this type of packaging. As Stéphane Soudais, Head of Starlinger’s Consumer Bags Division points out, the company can produce PET tape fabric from virgin PET and recycled PET pellets on their machines for a variety of packaging applications since several years. Now they have achieved a breakthrough in working with recycled PET: they can produce rPET tapes directly from PET bottle flakes.

As of January 1, 2017, Mr Christian Kapsamer, formerly of Husky Injection Molding Systems, will join Agr International as the Regional Director, Agr Northwestern Europe. In this role, Mr Kapsamer will head a newly established regional sales territory that was created to address continued growth and increased demand for Agr products in North and Western Europe. This new region includes Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, the Nordic countries and some of the surrounding areas.

Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Group has announced that it has officially transferred ownership to the Dutch based private equity firm, Egeria. This follows the announcement in September that Egeria had signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Group from an affiliate of Warburg Pincus.

Polymetrix received two new orders for SSP capacity expansion projects and is currently starting-up a relocated SSP plant. By the end of 2017 more than 450,000t/a of PET will be processed with Polymetrix SSP technology on the African continent.

Avery Dennison Corporation announced that it named Jeroen Diderich to the role of vice president and general manager for Materials Group Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), effective January 1, 2017. Jeroen will replace Angelo Depietri, who will be retiring at the end of the year.

Bericap has developed a new 2-piece sports closure, allowing a 2-colour look with a transparent PP shell and a coloured HDPE pourer section. The new sports closure is designed with a tear strip, offering tamper evidence functionality for the over-cap, but it will also be available as bridge-only - just break the bridges by moving the over-cap upward with the thumb.

During November, packaging company Retal successfully participated in the European exhibitions BrauBeviale in Nuremberg, Germany and All4Pack in Paris, France. Retal presented full portfolio of preforms, closures, containers and PET films. Of particular interest for many visitors at the Retal stand were the new closures 1881 Xlight SF as well as containers for the dairy industry.

In the works for several years, Agr International, Inc. has announced the commercialisation of its CrystalView product for optimising the material properties of PET bottles. The introduction of the CrystalView product expands the capabilities and the potential of Agr’s Process Pilot product group well beyond the measurement and management of material distribution. With this product, bottle manufacturers have the means to run the coldest possible process in order to optimise bottles material properties (orientation) while maintaining target material distribution.

A custom-moulded bottle from RPC Promens Consumer Llantrisant is claimed to ensure that a new range of healthy, probiotic drinks stands out on-shelf. London-based Plenish is using the 330ml PET bottle from RPC to pack all three flavours – Lime Cucumber, Pineapple Ginger and Blueberry Pear – of its organic Water+ range.

On 9th November the annual World Beverage Innovation Awards took place at BrauBeviale in Germany as part of the 14th Beverage Awards. PET Engineering received during the ceremony its second World Beverage Innovation Award in the category “Best Bottle in PET” for Lux, the new PET premium bottle for still and sparkling water.

The Germany-based investment company Aurelius Equity Opportunities SE & Co. KGaA is selling its Evolve Polymers subsidiary based in Hemswell, UK, to Plastipak Packaging, Inc. Evolve Polymers is a recycler of PET bottles.

The 2016 edition of the trade show All4Pack Paris, global marketplace for Packaging, Processing, Printing & Handling, has just closed. The show with its 1,500 exhibitors has been attended by 87,815 professionals from 100 countries mainly from the EMEA zone.

Indian Bangalore-based rigid packaging firm, Manjushree Technopack Ltd, announced the acquisition of Varahi Limited. The strategic move which is a first for India’s largest PET and preform manufacturer is intended to widen its lead as the largest supplier of rigid plastic packaging products in India.

The Coca-Cola Company, together with its three main bottling groups in China - Coca-Cola Bottling Investments Group China ("BIG"), COFCO Coca-Cola Beverages Limited (a subsidiary of COFCO Corporation, "COFCO") and Swire Beverages Holdings Limited ("Swire") - commemorated the completion of a definitive agreement to refranchise all existing Company-owned bottling operations in China. The transaction will result in a divide of the Coca-Cola's bottling system in China between the two franchise partners - COFCO and Swire.

Petainer has launched a range of new rental agreements for filling and blowing lines to help customers take full advantage of the petainerKeg system. In a first for the one-way keg market, the agreements have been designed to give breweries, wineries, cider producers and other beverage manufacturers access to new equipment which will enable them to grow and enter new markets.

Avery Dennison has collaborated with partners throughout the supply chain namely Viridor and PET UK, to help Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) reduce waste, costs, and the carbon footprint of Smartwater production in the United Kingdom.

With immediate effect KHS is to cooperate with the LiquiForm Group by contributing its own patents to the development of innovative moulding and filling manufacturing technology, a technique which combines two previously separate processes. The two companies have now signed a license agreement to this effect.

Sukano, a leader in the development and production of additive and colour masterbatches for polyester and specialty resins, announces that it is expanding globally, with investments in all production sites worldwide. These investments are being made in response to increased demand of the company’s products and services. This summary captures highlights of two days 2016 Recycled Polyester and PET Packaging Conference which took place September 21th – 23th in Shanghai, China. Sidel has been awarded certification for the efficiency of its Sidel Matrix blower by a leading technical service organisation, TÜV SÜD. The new certification is an international stamp of approval for the energy consumption efficiency of Sidel equipment. It is claimed to provide objective validation of the blower’s performance by an independent organisation and demonstrates that the Sidel Matrix blower complies with very high standards, is safe and sustainable - and has minimal impact on the environment.

Husky Injection Molding Systems demonstrates two complete integrated closure systems. The recently introduced HyCAP 4 system for beverage closure manufacturing comes with more machine, mould and auxiliary integration to offer increased productivity, energy efficiency and a simplified operator experience. The HyCAP 4 is running a 1.25 gram 29/25 closure for a mineral water application at a 2.4 second cycle time. For the first time, the company also demonstrates its new system solution for the manufacture of specialty closures, HyperSync.

SMI presents its rotary blow moulder series EBS (Electronic Blowing System) Ergon at K show. The series includes seven models, from 4 to 16 cavities, suitable for the production of PET containers up to 3 litres. The company states that the maximum output is of 2,300 bph per cavity for the 0.5 litre format (still water). Furthermore there are three HC models, from 3 to 6 cavities, for the production of containers up to 10 litres, with a maximum output of 1,200 bph per cavity for the 5 litre format.

Cooperation between NGR and Kuhne is raising the level of quality for direct production of food-grade PET sheets made of skeleton scrap, sheet production scrap or PET bottle flakes. The integrated system consists of a shredder-feeder-extruder combination for producing plastic melt, the P:React unit for improving the quality of PET and the sheet system from Kuhne for producing PET sheets with tightest tolerances. Both PET sheet producers and thermoformed part manufacturers will benefit from the result.

In-Mould labels company Verstraete will, in the coming months, start preparing the construction work for the new production site in Clarksville, Tennessee (US), together with its parent company Constantia Flexibles. The new site is intended to allow Belgium-based Verstraete IML to get closer to its customers in the largest growth market for IML labels outside Europe. The site will begin production in the second half of 2017 and will have multiple printing press and finishing lines. Some 55 jobs will be created.

The Swiss Säntis Ag is transferring its PET packaging business unit at the end of 2016 to Bonapack AG also located in Switzerland. Bonapack will also be managing the business in the PET blow moulding unit in cooperation with Biplast AG, particularly in the Development, Production and Service divisions.

For most PET converters, the overall market is growing whereas average bottle quantities per contract are getting smaller. This means a variety of different orders have to be produced within the same time frame, for example to include different neck types. To meet such demanding circumstances, increased flexibility is the only way forward.

For the first time at the Düsseldorf fair the compact line with the 24-cavity CCM compression press synchronised with the cap anti-tamper band slitter will be presented. The Colorarcap cap digital printing solution has now reached a higher level of development that allows coloured caps to be decorated too, thus exploring what some consider being the final frontier of digital decoration: unlimited colour development, ultra-high definition, yet also flexibility to ensure the right response whatever the customer’s production/promotional needs.

The Infrared Rotary Dryers IRD is used for crystallising and drying virgin or regrind materials for a number of plastics, including PET. Through the use of the continuously functioning IRD, the need for energy-intensive processing using dry air is said to be completely eliminated.

According to New Zealand news media, Coca-Cola Amatil New Zealand has unveiled its new state-of-the-art Keri juice manufacturing plant in Auckland. The 10.000m2 facility has a capacity to produce 800.000 bottles/day (36.000bph), which doubles the capacity of previous plants.

The management board of the Albis Plastic Group has announced that Carsten W. Wörner, Chief Sales Officer will, by mutual agreement, leave the company on 30 September 2016. Wörner took on the position of CSO on April 1, 2012 and since then has lead worldwide sales and the technical applications department. He was also responsible for the structural adjustment of sales as part of the progressive internationalisation strategy.

The non-profit environmental association Ecoce is promoting the collection and recycling of post-consumer PET and other materials in Mexico. The association has now published new figures on recycling in Mexico: according to their own figures, Mexico has recorded the highest collection quota in America for PET for the past four years.

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global chemical producer, announced the completion of joint venture (JV) of IVL’s PET Company, Micro Polypet Private Limited (MicroPet), in India with Dhunseri Petrochem Ltd. (Dhunseri). Simultaneously, IVL has acquired a 50% stake in Dhunseri’s PET Company in India, Dhunseri Petglobal Ltd. By combining the two companies as equal partners, the resulting total capacity of 700,000t/a will make the new JV the second largest in India.

Egeria, the Dutch based private equity firm has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Group (“Clondalkin”) from an affiliate of Warburg Pincus. Completion of the transaction is expected to occur in Q4 2016.

Nazca Capital –a Spanish private equity firm focused in the mid-market segment– has reached an agreement with the family Baños (owners and founders of the company) for the acquisition of a stake around 75% in Caiba, a leading Spanish company specialised in the manufacture of PET preforms and containers for the food, household products and personal hygiene sectors.

Demand for pressure-sensitive materials continues to grow in Europe. To meet future demand, Avery Dennison is strengthening its European manufacturing footprint with a $65 million investment to expand its Rodange, Luxembourg production facility. The investment is one of Avery Dennison’s largest operational initiatives globally in recent years.

Coca-Cola created a new packaging design for their Diet Coke bottles in Canada. The vibrant patterns are available for a limited time for 500ml PET as well as 355ml and 237m. glass bottles of Diet Coke. The “One of a Kind” campaigns offers millions of designs to choose from as no two bottles look exactly the same.

In the packaging sector, film manufacturers are demanding lines which are becoming ever wider, ever faster and ever more efficient, with high production capacity and low energy consumption. Amcor Rigid Plastics has entered into an agreement to acquire the assets of Sonoco’s Global Plastic blow moulding business in North America. Sonoco manufactures custom rigid plastic bottles, jars, overcaps and closures for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, health and beauty and personal care markets in seven plants located in the U.S. and Canada.

Terekas Sweden AB launched mini PET stretch blowing machine series FlexBlow. In combination with sales conveyor promotion method, Terekas Sweden AB has tripled their flexible PET blower sales this year compared to last year. The company has signed 17 contracts across the world, last year 6 flexible series machines has been sold.

Plastipak Packaging Inc. said it will add two manufacturing lines to its Birmingham area facility,a $10.4 million expansion that will create at least five new jobs. The new lines will be added to its location at the Jefferson County Metropolitan Park in McCalla, Alabama, USA where it manufactures plastic bottles for the beverage industry.

The closures used for 5-gallon water containers are known as HOD (Home and Office Delivery) closures. The necks of these containers are standard across the world. Due to the blow moulding process, however, the necks usually exhibit poor quality and a variation in diameter which often results in leakage from 5-gallon containers, except where an adequate HOD closure is used.

Coca-Cola Sweden partnered with Constantia Flexibles to create a label with a whitened varnish area that allows consumers to draw their own designs directly onto the label. In order to achieve this, Constantia Flexibles supplied a 38 µ white OPP film label, creating a specific area that is fully customisable with crayons.

Husky Injection Molding Systems has announced the launch of its next generation system for high output beverage closure moulding, HyCap 4. Husky launched its HyCap platform in 2009. “Husky is committed to reducing our customers’ total cost to produce,” said Gerardo Chiaia, Husky’s President of Global Beverage Packaging.

To better serve the expanding customer base, Athena is making organizational changes of the management team: Harold Luttmann has taken over as acting CEO, in addition to his current role of Chief Operations Officer. A Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) will be added to the management team shortly. Founder Robert Schad has temporarily assumed this responsibility.

Amcor Rigid Plastics has announced the appointment of Ashish Saxena as vice president and general manager of LiquiForm Group LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amcor. Saxena will be based at Amcor’s Saline, Michigan, USA facility and will report directly to Amcor Rigid Plastics President Michael Schmitt.

According to a WARN notice filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Graham Packaging is going to close its plant in Belvidere, New Jersey, USA. The effective date is September 26, 2016. The closing of the plastic container manufacturers’ facility will affect 71 employees.

Clariant announced availability of new blow-moulding tools that can help customers evaluate how Clariant colour and additive masterbatches perform in real-world applications. Torus Measurement Systems have announced the launch of the B304 Top Load & Volume Gauge. The system showcases a single operation Top Load & Volume Test to the plastic bottle market. The KHS Group looks back on an exceptionally successful month. In July 2016 the Group, headquartered in Dortmund, Germany, was able to record several big orders. The line speed should have a capacity of 50,000bph with a labelling machine speed of 55,000bph. The bottle shapes of 350ml and 500ml should be processed in ExtraLight on a blow moulding machine.

Kinder Cola, the Dutch beverage line aimed at children, has tapped Constantia Flexibles to produce their new shrink sleeve labels. Made without caffeine and with significantly less sugar than traditional cola, Kinder Cola is the premier youth cola beverage in the region.

Lightweight Containers is opening a new production plant in Grossbreitenbach, Germany. The fully automated production line has a capacity of 400 KeyKeg Slimlines per hour and will be operational in the third quarter of this year. The line can produce all the members of the KeyKeg Slimline family of kegs. PET-Verpackungen Deutschland is the production partner and will manage the day-to-day production.

Husky Injection Molding Systems, announced that a state-of-the-art, automated manufacturing line is now in operation at its Luxembourg facility. This is the third straight year that Husky has made a significant investment in new manufacturing equipment to support its growing base of hot runner and controller customers. The SK Ergon packers can now be equipped with an automatic handle applicator of the Pre-Shrinking Handle Applicator (PSHA) series, which attaches a handle on a section of the shrink film before it's wrapped around a group of containers moving toward the shrink tunnel. Amcor Rigid Plastics announced plans to close the company’s preform manufacturing facility located in Dayton, Ohio, USA. The plant, which manufactures plastic preforms for the beverage industry and other applications, will begin a gradual ramp-down and is scheduled to cease production by December 31, 2016.

Bekum Maschinenfabriken now have a new Technical Director. Dr Wilfried Lehmann will take over this role with immediate effect. Dr Lehmann is known to Bekum customers already, as he previously held this position from 1998 to 2002. Ciel, one of the major water-bottling companies operating in Morocco, has been supplied with the new integrated rinser-filler-capper monoblock unit. The Ciel brand – part of the Coca-Cola Group – has purchased the first monoblock filler unit 12-12-4 ALF produced by Sacmi Filling.
