With over 76,000 visitors from more than 170 countries, drinktec has chalked up the best-ever result in its 66-year history. The number of visitors rose by 10,000 over the previous event in 2013. In particular at the international level, the trade fair was able to grow attendance again, this time by 12%. The ratio of visitors from outside Germany thus rose to 67%. The number of exhibitors increased to 1,749 from 80 countries. That is mainly attributable to the wine technology trade fair SIMEI, which was held as part of drinktec for the first time, as well as further growth in the number of exhibitors at drinktec itself.

A very special Open House was held from 4 to 6 September at the Sipa headquarters in Vittorio Veneto, Italy, where the unique direct processing of washed PET flakes to make food contact grade preforms was demonstrated live on the world's first PET Inline Preform system. Petcore Europe’s annual conference will take place in Brussels, Belgium from February 7-8, 2018. Building up on the success of the last years, the organisers decided to expand the 2018 conference edition to two days. The first half day is exclusively dedicated to PET Business & Strategy, followed by a Networking Event in the evening. The second day focuses on Trends in Collection, Recycling & Sustainability and features presentations from research, industry and EU decision makers.

As of September 1, 2017, Markus Kosak is the new project manager for drinktec, the trade fair for the beverage and liquid food industry. Kosak was most recently project manager for the international drinktec trade fairs. He has taken over from Petra Westphal, who will remain project group manager for all drinktec events and, in future, assume direct project management responsibility for the international drinktec trade fairs.

The Bühler Group owns again 100% of the shares of Polymetrix after buying back all shares held by Cross Equity Partners in July 2017. The buy-back of the Polymetrix shares is the first step on the path to the new strategic ownership of Polymetrix AG. Milliken Chemical, Hall A2 - Stand 108 Milliken will demonstrate how its ClearShield Colorless UV Absorbers can bring value to PET packaging by protecting UV-sensitive contents from degradation while maintaining the material’s clarity and transparency. ClearShield is intended to protect beverages and other UV-sensitive contents against harmful light exposure by incorporating the UV blocker into the PET package itself. These absorbers filter 95% of UV light at up to 390 nanometers and are effective at low loadings, enabling the use of more highly UV-sensitive natural colourants in the packaged products.

The aim of this alliance is to incorporate the technical expertise of both companies into the planning and design of PET recycling lines and complete factories, so as to be able to offer clients from both the beverage and PET recycling industries an optimal line or an entire factory.

Shyam Plastic Machinery, Hall A4 – Stand 546 India-based Shyam manufactures stretch blow moulding machines, ranging from 600 B/H to 12,000 B/H. The company will be demonstrating a 7 cavity all electric Pristine series linear blowing machine, with a speed of 10,000 B/H. The preform loading system and heating conveyor is based on continuous movement without the pneumatic reciprocating movements, eliminating abnormal wear & tear of moving parts and also reduces air consumption. The machine is based on Neck Hold system, right from preform entry to bottle ejection, thereby reducing the number of change parts, and change-over time.

Société Générale des Techniques (SGT), Hall A4 – Stand 330 Société Générale des Techniques (SGT), a French family firm, has consolidated its expertise in the manufacture of PET preforms with the recent acquisition of an injection press exclusively dedicated to multilayer applications.

With Andrea Festelli, the Sesotec group, with effect from 1 April 2017, has recruited a new managing director for the two Italian subsidiaries. The Genoese-born Festelli studied electrical engineering at the university of Genoa. Before he moved to Sesotec, Festelli had worked for seven years for the Italian subsidiary of the GEA group, where he held the position of managing director, and before that headed up the service department. In the course of his professional career he has held positions in international sales, marketing, and R&D departments.

United Caps, Hall A4 - Stand 535 At Drinktec, United Caps will demonstrate how their market-driven approach fosters the development of closures that perform as well in the plant as they do in the hand. With a 50/50 split between customised and non-bespoke solutions, United Caps will also showcase the latest in customised solutions like the innovative Wattwiller closure, which features a petal-flower design that is not only eye-catching but allows end users to open bottles with little effort.

Krones, Hall B6 – Stand 100 The principal focus of Krones’ presence at this year’s drinktec is on improving line performance, to ensure higher individualisation and flexibility, and to impart additional sustainability to the production operation. Digitalisation plays a key role in this context, and constitutes a unifying theme for the entire Krones stand. Because marrying iron and steel to clouds and data makes for an even closer intermeshing of all processes along the entire value added chain – and will in the end upgrade performance levels in the production environment as well.

Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) announced today that Russell Broome will step down as Managing Director. Russell came to SPE in 2014 with a quarter of a century of experience in the plastics industry and as a long-term member and volunteer leader of SPE, including a term as President of the Society in 2011-2012.

Gebo Cermex, Hall A6 - Stand 330 Gebo Cermex, part of the Sidel Group, will showcase a range of material handling solutions, including the latest developments in automation and connectivity to help secure greater performance from bottling lines in evolving and demanding markets.

Vipoll Hall A2 - Booth 303 The Slovenian specialist in filling plants, Vipoll, will be presenting a world premiere with its "All-in-One" combined rinser/filler/capper block for glass and PET bottles as well as cans. The "VISITRON VKR-E 32-32-4K/4D" is able to process 9,500 330ml cans and 330ml bottles per hour. The system is suitable for carbonated and still drinks such as beer, soft drinks, wine or juice.

Recycled PET (rPET) from PET Recycling Team GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alpla based in Wöllersdorf/Lower Austria, results in 79% lower CO2 emissions compared to new material. This is a significantly higher saving than previously assumed. A study conducted by denkstatt GmbH on behalf of Alpla came to this conclusion.

Pretium Packaging, a North American manufacturer of plastic containers and closures, using technology from Practically Impossible Labs, Houston, Texas, has developed a 64-ounce, 38-400 mm finish, stock PET container with an integrated handle.

RPC Promens Consumer Llantrisant has launched a series of PET bottles suitable for all types of sauces, condiments and toppings. The new Mercury range combines high shelf impact with consumer convenience. The stylish curved design and glass-like clarity of the PET ensure that products are displayed to their best advantage, while the lightweight, easy-to-handle and squeezable bottles are ideal for home use.

Movacolor, developer and manufacturer of high quality dosing systems for the plastics industry, is going to build a new building in its current location Sneek, The Netherlands. It is expected that the international company will move to the fully energy-neutral building in the third quarter of 2018. The 100% sustainable building will include solar panels, top cooling in the entire building, underfloor heating and heat pumps. Of course, charging stations for electric cars are provided.

Italian company ACMI installed a complete packaging line for PET bottles able to handle round and square bottles at Ferrarelle SpA. The rated filling speed is 40,000 bottles per hour for round formats and 36,000 for two litre square formats.

Tech Long, Hall B5 - Stand 322 At Drinktec 2017 Tech Long will introduce its G5, Generation 5, blow moulding machines to the European market. The G5 machines are available in formats from four to 36 cavities, with a blowing rate of 2250 to 2400 standard bottles per hour per cavity, and with the capability to blow any PET container from 0,2l to 20 litre.

At around three months before the start of drink technology India (dti), the event is attracting strong interest from exhibitors. Over 90 percent of the available exhibition space is booked. Which means the event is approaching full capacity. Among the companies that have signed up to exhibit are leading names in the sector, for example, ACE Technologies, Anton Paar, Chemco Group, Krome Dispense, Repute Engineers, R J Brewing and The Brewmaster.

Holland Colours is launching Holcopearl 2287 for PET packaging. The polymer-based product is intended to deliver deep colours with optimal dispersion on automated lines running at high speeds. “The idea to develop Holcopearl came from customer feedback and the trends we see in the industry and among our customers and their customers,” says Wilfried Grob, Sales & Marketing Manager Europe at Holland Colours. Among these trends are the moves to higher production speeds, deeper colours, more sensitive dosage settings, and the switch to spherical PET granules instead of cylindrical ones.

With the founding of the Powerfil business unit, Erema, the manufacturer of plastics recycling systems, extends its portfolio and now also offers the proven melt filter as individual components for existing extrusion plants. Technical modifications were made to the filter systems prior to the foundation of the business unit.

Lanfranchi, Hall A6 - Stand 103 The intense R&D activities which have been a feature of Lanfranchi in recent years have led to a new result in terms of technological developments applied to unscramblers: the automatic change-over. The Unscrambler 2.0 is capable of handling a wide range of containers of different shapes and sizes.

Sesotec GmbH, a manufacturer of machines and systems for contaminant detection and material sorting for the food, plastics, and recycling industries, is growing in all segments, which correspondingly need more room. Early in July 2017 service acceptance at the company headquarters in German Schönberg therefore was relocated from Regener Straße 130 to Industriestraße 5. The new location lies close to the company headquarters and combines repairs department, spare parts storage, training rooms, technical support, and – now new – service acceptance.

Avery Dennison has strengthened its research and development capabilities with the hiring of Pascale Wautelet as vice president of R&D – Europe, Middle East and Africa within the company’s Label & Graphic Materials group. Wautelet, who will assume her new role on Sept. 1, will be based at Oegstgeest, The Netherlands, and report to Hassan Rmaile, global vice president of R&D for Avery Dennison’s Label & Graphic Materials group.

Alessandro Paini is the new General Manager of Sacmi Beverage, the company Division that, since 2009, covers all areas concerning the design and manufacture of machines and complete plants for beverage packaging. A mechanical engineer - and previously a key figure in a leading international Group that designs in-PET liquid packaging solutions - Paini has extensive Product Management experience. His past duties are ranging from coordination of R&D and global product portfolio management to development and implementation of new sales strategies.

Constantia Flexibles has signed an agreement to sell its Labels division to Multi- Color Corporation (“Multi-Color”) for an enterprise value of approximately €1.15 billion ($1.3 billion). The transaction is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2017, subject to regulatory approvals.

Claranor, Hall A3 - Stand 111 Claranor will be at Drinktec to present its latest innovations dedicated to the beverage industry. On top of its latest solutions: the Claranor Puls’Full Cap, a cap sterilisation for the most sensitive filling line. The cap is decontaminated not only inside, but also outside, adapted for ESL 60 days and more. Further on Claranor Essential, a cap decontamination equipment compact and cost attractive for lower speed lines (<16.000 bph) will be shown.

Coca-Cola European Partners has unveiled its new GB sustainable packaging strategy – setting out an ambition for its GB business unit to work with local and national partners to recover all its packaging so that more is recycled and none ends up as litter.

Arburg, Hall A4 - Stand 323 Arburg will demonstrate at Drinktec its injection moulding technology which has been specially optimised for the packaging industry, particularly for fast sequence and high-cavity moulds. The exhibit, a packaging version of the hybrid Allrounder 570 H, has a clamping force of 1,800 kN and a size 800 injection unit. Twenty-four drink bottle caps will be produced in a cycle time of only 2.7 seconds on a high-performance mould from Z-moulds. The weight of the HDPE moulded parts is 1.25 grams. A vacuum conveyor and a direct colouring device ensure a correspondingly high throughput. Quality monitoring is carried out in-line using an optical system.

Boxmore Packaging, with headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, will become a fully owned subsidiary of the Austrian packaging specialist Alpla. Boxmore Packaging is specialised in PET preforms, PET bottles and closures, and currently employs around 1,000 members of staff at nine locations.

Serac, Hall A5 - Stand 332 Serac confirms its expertise in container treatment based on dry processes with an industrial sterilisation solution using ebeam technology, capable of ensuring a 5 log bacteriological reduction on Bacillus Pumilus without leaving any chemical residue in the container and eliminating the consumption of chemical agents to decontaminate a bottle, BluStream is a technological breakthrough in the aseptic filling of plastic bottles, says Serac.

Heuft, Hall B4 - Stand 315 Heuft will showcase technologies and modules for precise product tracking, fault detection and rejection, with the aim of setting new standards in terms of detection accuracy, operational reliability and price / performance ratio.

And+Or, Hall A4 - Stand 202 The handle applicator SIAL6000 performs the insertion of (PP) lateral, colourable handles on PET bottles (from 2 up to 5 litres). This system allows PET bottles to be used for certain products when an easy pouring process is required.

Freudenberg claims to be Europe’s largest user of recycled PET in construction applications. The technology group has been active in recycling since the 1990s. The company’s plants in Novedrate and Pisticci Scalo, Italy, as well as in Colmar, France, recycle millions of PET bottles every day. The purified recyclate is processed into nonwovens that are used in construction, for example as substrates for bituminous waterproof membranes.

Agr, Hall A4 - Stand 336 Agr International, Inc. will be exhibiting an array of products for managing the production and quality of beverage containers. Featured will be the latest developments in advanced blowmoulder management, shelf-life control and pressurised container testing.

The upturn in domestic Italian packaging machinery sales has continued in the first quarter of 2017, on the heels of the two digit growth figures at the end of 2016. According to data collected by the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association Ucima, domestic sales have grown by +6.5% in the first quarter of 2017 over the same period of 2016, following the excellent +10.4% growth at the end of 2016.

The Supervisory Board of GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft has appointed Martine Snels to GEA’s Executive Board with effect from the beginning of October 2017. She will assume responsibility for GEA’s regions and countries organisation. Following her appointment, GEA will be headed by an Executive Board consisting of five members.

The Austrian company Next Generation Recyclingmaschinen GmbH (NGR) develops and manufactures plastics recycling equipment for industrial and consumer waste. As part of the reopening of the three year-old Customer Care Center in Taicang, NGR is expanding its sales activities in China and Southeast Asia.

As an economy and real personal disposable incomes grow, then so too does consumer demand for packaged products. In its new report, The Future of Rigid Plastic Packaging to 2022, Smithers Pira’s critical analysis of the key drivers shaping this segment show that the global rigid plastic packaging consumption is projected at 52.9 million tonnes in 2017 and is forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 3.7% to 63.4 million tonnes. Meanwhile materials used to produce rigid plastic packaging are valued at $166.3 billion in 2017 and are forecast to grow during 2017–2022 at an annual rate of 4.2% to $204.5 billion.

Carbios, a green chemistry company specialising in enzymatic bioprocesses applied to plastic and textile polymers, and TechnipFMC, a leading company in the fields of energy, chemistry and bio-sourced industries, announce the launch of a project for the industrial development of Carbios PET enzymatic recycling process. This will allow to produce virgin PET from plastic waste. This contract covers assistance to Carbios for the scale up of its process to ensure industrial competitiveness.

Alpla, a global provider of plastic packaging, has acquired a 100 per cent stake in the Italian company Propack Srl. The company, based in Ostellato (FE), is specialised in the production of HDPE and PET bottles for home-care. The agreement has been signed in mid June. The deal is expected to be concluded by the middle of July 2017. With this acquisition, the eighth plant in the country, Alpla has expanded its production capacities in the North-East of Italy.

The KHS Group has ratified its successful development of the previous year and again boosted its turnover, with sales totaling €1.18 billion last year. Carbios, a company in the field of bioplasturgy, announces that it has taken a new step forward with the production of PET oligomers made out of terephthalic acid coming from its biorecycling process of PET plastic bottles.

Sidel has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its Aseptic Combi Predis FMa blow fill seal filler following tests run at a dairy customer in North America. This means that the Sidel Aseptic Combi Predis FMa PET filler is validated for low acid manufacturing and commercial distribution in the United States market. The Sidel Aseptic blow fill seal solution is the world’s first aseptic PET filling equipment with dry preform sterilisation approved by FDA.

PolyOne Corporation, a provider of specialised polymer materials, services and solutions, today announced two internal executive appointments. Mark Crist will serve as president of Color, Additives & Inks, and J. Scott Horn, Jr. will become president of PolyOne Distribution (POD), effective July 3, 2017. Mr. Crist replaces John Van Hulle, who is retiring from PolyOne.

The standalone facility is located approximately 30 miles north of Milwaukee. This plant is just over 100,000 sq. ft. and supplies six layer bottles to Gehl Foods for aseptic filling in the food and dairy category.

The manufacturer of recycling systems is relying on new production processes with the optimum use of resources in its production of assembly groups. The Clasper bottle engineered by Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) is a combination of two polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers and a shrink label. The first commercialisation of this new technology was the recent introduction of Yumix portable, shelf-stable line of cocktails. The bottom holds 50ml of premium alcohol and features a heat-applied aluminum-foil seal.

The Starlinger recoStar PET bottle-to-bottle recycling line which has been installed in April 2016 in the plastics recycling facility of the Canadian water bottler Ice River Springs in Feversham, Ontario, is said to deliver excellent production results.

Following tests on the Nature MultiPack the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) has confirmed that it can be fully recycled. The adhesive specially developed and supplied by NMP Systems and KHS has thus been granted interim approval for further market tests in Europe until June 30, 2019. The adhesive on the unique Nature MultiPack packaging system has no adverse effect on the rPET. Further tests shall be run to enable permanent approval to be granted.

Integrated packaging solutions leader Pro Mach, Inc. announced it has acquired global high-speed labelling solutions provider P.E. Labellers SpA. The addition of Italy-based P.E. Labellers is intended to expand Pro Mach’s capabilities to provide high-speed decorative labelling and integrated solutions worldwide. All global subsidiaries and management teams of P.E. The City of Buenos Aires, in partnership with San Diego-based CP Group, opened an advanced recycling system in Argentina. The new 10 TPH residential single stream recycling system began running last October in Villa Soldati, a neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Since then it has helped the city achieve its sustainability goals.

The Thai Beverage Public Company Limited (“Thai Beverage”) is one of the largest beverage companies in Thailand and the ASEAN region. Thai Beverage has decided to set up its own PET-preform production and, as a result, its subsidiary BevTech Co., Ltd. invested PET-Line machine technology from Netstal. The contract signing ceremony took place in Bangkok.

The Logoplaste Vimágua water bottle has been awarded with the iF Design Award in the category “Packaging Design / Beverages”. Each year, Germany’s oldest independent design organisation, Hannover-based iF International Forum Design GmbH, organises the iF Design Award. This year’s award ceremony took place in the BMW Welt in Munich, Germany, on March 10, 2017.

According to a research from Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC), bottled water passed a major milestone in 2016, when it surpassed carbonated soft drinks to become the largest beverage category by volume in the United States. Total bottled water volume grew from 11.8 billion gallons in 2015 to 12.8 billion gallons in 2016, an increase of nearly 9%, which marked the third year in a row of accelerating growth.

Constantia Flexibles Group is optimising its film-based flexible packaging, manufacturing footprint in Europe by closing down its plant in Bucharest in Romania. The closure is expected to be finalised by July 2017 and will affect about 90 employees.

Danone and Nestlé Waters have joined forces with Origin Materials, a startup based in Sacramento, California, to form the NaturALL Bottle Alliance. Together, the three partners aim to develop and launch at commercial scale a PET plastic bottle made from bio-based material, i.e. 100% sustainable and renewable resources. The project uses biomass feedstocks, such as previously used cardboard and sawdust, so it does not divert resources or land from food production for human or animal consumption.

It takes about five bottles to make an 18-count egg container, and about three bottles to make a 12-count egg container. Consumers love being able to see the eggs they are buying without opening the packages, and store personnel are happy about the reduction in egg breakage and packages damaged from being handled.

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) announced that its Machinery Safety Standards Committee has published the new voluntary standard establishing requirements for the manufacture and use of injection moulding machines. The new standard aligns well with the European and draft ISO standards on this subject, making it easier for American manufacturers to compete with their counterparts abroad.

Cold Jet, producer of dry ice cleaning and production system solutions, moved into its new technology center in Weinsheim, Germany. The new 640m² building is constructed on a space of 3,000m². The building is designed for future expansion by the possibility of adding more modules. The new office houses sales, service, training, marketing and administration for the regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, allowing for more synergy.

Processing Technologies International (PTi) has released the findings of an independent study which reaffirms FDA guidelines for the use of virgin PET cap layers as functional barriers over post-consumer recycled non-letter of no objection (hereinafter referred to as PCR) PET flake materials for direct food packaging use at room temperature. The study, which was completed in conjunction with Plastic Technologies Inc., Holland, Ohio, and Container Science Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, found that a 1-mil-thick virgin PET cap layer meets the necessary functional barrier requirements, eliminating surface contaminates within multilayer food packages made of PCR PET materials for room temperature (70°F/21°C) applications.

The demand for plastic bottles continues to grow across numerous products and sectors, including home goods, personal care, beverages, food and pharmaceuticals. With the industry slated to grow 4.6% annually over the next five years, bottling has become one of the fastest growing industry segments in plastics manufacturing. Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) recognized this trend and is adding a new exhibit space - the Bottle Zone - at NPE2018, taking place May 7-11, 2018 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, USA.

On February 7, the EU published a commission decision terminating an expiry review of the anti-dumping measures applicable to imports of certain PET originating in the People's Republic of China. According to the European Commission, a further investigation on the 13-year-long trade remedy measures has not brought to light any considerations showing that such termination would be against the Union interest. Therefore the Commission considered that the present review proceeding should be terminated.

Plastic beverage bottles will find a new life in a new $62 million plant being built in Dallas, USA, as CarbonLite gets ready to add a second facility to process 100 million pounds of post-consumer PET plastic bottles with the use of 100% green power. Construction is underway in a brand new 230,000-square-foot facility located in the City of Dallas. Start-up is planned for the end of the second quarter 2017, according to Leon Farahnik, chairman and CEO of CarbonLite.

By creating a PETG alternative to traditional wine bottles, which are not only functional but are also designed to fit through a conventional letterbox, the brand Garçon Wines, based in London, UK, is opening up a new way to have wine delivered at home. Thanks to a unique shape, the 75cl bottles fit conveniently through a letterbox. Being made from PETG, they are also tough enough to withstand the delivery process.

The Procter & Gamble Company announced that Head & Shoulders (H&S) will produce the world’s first recyclable shampoo bottle made from up to 25% recycled beach plastic. In partnership with recycling experts TerraCycle and SUEZ, this innovation will come to France this summer as a limited-edition H&S bottle available to consumers in Carrefour. This will be the world’s largest production run of recyclable bottles made with post-consumer recycled (PCR) beach plastic, and a first major step in establishing a unique supply chain that involves the support of thousands of volunteers and hundreds of NGOs collecting plastic waste found on beaches.

With the recent expiry of their business relationship with Ferromatik Milacron Benelux BV, Milacron has announced a comprehensive direct sales and service infrastructure for the Benelux market to be in place since January 1, 2017.

With immediate effect the KHS Group’s production sites are now certified according to the new, revised ISO 9001:2015 standard. The current 2015 standard replaces the ISO 9001:2008 norm previously in widespread use. The KHS factory in Ahmedabad in India has been awarded the certificate for the first time.

The producer of bottling plants and packaging machines SMI is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The group’s origins date back to the mid-‘70s, when Luigi Nava set up a machine shop in San Pellegrino Terme, Italy. More than 40 industry leaders have endorsed a new action plan to tackle global plastics issues, and have begun working together to create a more effective global system for plastics. The action plan is presented in The New Plastics Economy: Catalysing action, a new study by the World Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation with analytical support from SYSTEMIQ, which reveals that concerted action by industry could result in reuse and recycling of 70% of all global plastic packaging, up from today's recycling rate of just 14%.

Agthia Group, a food and beverage group in the UAE, has signed a purchase agreement for 100% of the shares in the water business of Delta Marketing Company, based in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia producing “Al Ain” brand water. The transaction is expected to be completed by Quarter 1, 2017, following regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Unilever committed to ensuring that all of its plastic packaging is fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 as it called on the entire fast-moving consumer goods industry to accelerate progress towards the circular economy.

The US Californian company Stacktek is featuring a wine packaging solution engineered to emulate the look and feel of glass while offering portable convenience, portion control and ease. StackTek consists of four pre-filled, stemless 'glasses' that snap together to form the equivalent of a traditional 750ml bottle of wine.

With over 1.8 million tonnes of collected and recycled PET bottles, the 2015 European PET collection and recycling volumes have increased by 5% compared to 2014. This means that nearly 59% of all bottles placed in the European market have been collected for recycling in 2015, outlining an increase of 2% points compared to the 2014 collection rate.

With the development of the production technology for woven plastic sacks made from rPET, Starlinger & Co. GmbH now offers the opportunity of closed-loop production for this type of packaging. As Stéphane Soudais, Head of Starlinger’s Consumer Bags Division points out, the company can produce PET tape fabric from virgin PET and recycled PET pellets on their machines for a variety of packaging applications since several years. Now they have achieved a breakthrough in working with recycled PET: they can produce rPET tapes directly from PET bottle flakes.

As of January 1, 2017, Mr Christian Kapsamer, formerly of Husky Injection Molding Systems, will join Agr International as the Regional Director, Agr Northwestern Europe. In this role, Mr Kapsamer will head a newly established regional sales territory that was created to address continued growth and increased demand for Agr products in North and Western Europe. This new region includes Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, the Nordic countries and some of the surrounding areas.

Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Group has announced that it has officially transferred ownership to the Dutch based private equity firm, Egeria. This follows the announcement in September that Egeria had signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Group from an affiliate of Warburg Pincus.

Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) recently launched Glacéau Smartwater Sparkling, a vapour distilled spring water with added electrolytes and carbonation for a clean and crisp taste. As they did with the original Glacéau Smartwater label, CCEP worked with Constantia Flexibles to create a pressure sensitive label that fits with the brand’s values.

Effective immediately, the Polish Vodka brand Sobieski is now marketing its 1.75l premium product in a PET bottle from Greiner Packaging. Polymetrix got recently awarded with new SSP and rPET contracts in various regions. Currently bottle grade PET plant capacities are expanded throughout Africa. Polymetrix received two new orders for SSP capacity expansion projects and is currently starting-up a relocated SSP plant. By the end of 2017 more than 450,000t/a of PET will be processed with Polymetrix SSP technology on the African continent.

Avery Dennison Corporation announced that it named Jeroen Diderich to the role of vice president and general manager for Materials Group Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), effective January 1, 2017. Jeroen will replace Angelo Depietri, who will be retiring at the end of the year.

Bericap has developed a new 2-piece sports closure, allowing a 2-colour look with a transparent PP shell and a coloured HDPE pourer section. The new sports closure is designed with a tear strip, offering tamper evidence functionality for the over-cap, but it will also be available as bridge-only - just break the bridges by moving the over-cap upward with the thumb.

During November, packaging company Retal successfully participated in the European exhibitions BrauBeviale in Nuremberg, Germany and All4Pack in Paris, France. Retal presented full portfolio of preforms, closures, containers and PET films. Of particular interest for many visitors at the Retal stand were the new closures 1881 Xlight SF as well as containers for the dairy industry.

In the works for several years, Agr International, Inc. has announced the commercialisation of its CrystalView product for optimising the material properties of PET bottles. The introduction of the CrystalView product expands the capabilities and the potential of Agr’s Process Pilot product group well beyond the measurement and management of material distribution. With this product, bottle manufacturers have the means to run the coldest possible process in order to optimise bottles material properties (orientation) while maintaining target material distribution.

A custom-moulded bottle from RPC Promens Consumer Llantrisant is claimed to ensure that a new range of healthy, probiotic drinks stands out on-shelf. London-based Plenish is using the 330ml PET bottle from RPC to pack all three flavours – Lime Cucumber, Pineapple Ginger and Blueberry Pear – of its organic Water+ range.

On 9th November the annual World Beverage Innovation Awards took place at BrauBeviale in Germany as part of the 14th Beverage Awards. PET Engineering received during the ceremony its second World Beverage Innovation Award in the category “Best Bottle in PET” for Lux, the new PET premium bottle for still and sparkling water.

The Germany-based investment company Aurelius Equity Opportunities SE & Co. KGaA is selling its Evolve Polymers subsidiary based in Hemswell, UK, to Plastipak Packaging, Inc. Evolve Polymers is a recycler of PET bottles.

The 2016 edition of the trade show All4Pack Paris, global marketplace for Packaging, Processing, Printing & Handling, has just closed. The show with its 1,500 exhibitors has been attended by 87,815 professionals from 100 countries mainly from the EMEA zone.

Indian Bangalore-based rigid packaging firm, Manjushree Technopack Ltd, announced the acquisition of Varahi Limited. The strategic move which is a first for India’s largest PET and preform manufacturer is intended to widen its lead as the largest supplier of rigid plastic packaging products in India.

The Coca-Cola Company, together with its three main bottling groups in China - Coca-Cola Bottling Investments Group China ("BIG"), COFCO Coca-Cola Beverages Limited (a subsidiary of COFCO Corporation, "COFCO") and Swire Beverages Holdings Limited ("Swire") - commemorated the completion of a definitive agreement to refranchise all existing Company-owned bottling operations in China. The transaction will result in a divide of the Coca-Cola's bottling system in China between the two franchise partners - COFCO and Swire.

Petainer has launched a range of new rental agreements for filling and blowing lines to help customers take full advantage of the petainerKeg system. In a first for the one-way keg market, the agreements have been designed to give breweries, wineries, cider producers and other beverage manufacturers access to new equipment which will enable them to grow and enter new markets.

Mpact Recycling has called upon consumers to take greater care when disposing of their refuse. “We urge consumers to separate recyclable plastic bottles and other recyclable items at home instead of relying on recyclers to do so at landfill. By that time the plastic is often too contaminated with items like soil to be recycled,” says Ronald Fairbanks, General Manager at Mpact Polymers.

Avery Dennison has collaborated with partners throughout the supply chain namely Viridor and PET UK, to help Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) reduce waste, costs, and the carbon footprint of Smartwater production in the United Kingdom.

With immediate effect KHS is to cooperate with the LiquiForm Group by contributing its own patents to the development of innovative moulding and filling manufacturing technology, a technique which combines two previously separate processes. The two companies have now signed a license agreement to this effect.

Sukano, a leader in the development and production of additive and colour masterbatches for polyester and specialty resins, announces that it is expanding globally, with investments in all production sites worldwide. These investments are being made in response to increased demand of the company’s products and services. At the same time, the company is using this expansion as a platform to launch its new corporate identity.

A good economic state of the international plastics and rubber sector and a positive outlook for the future characterised this year’s K show and made for an excellent mood amongst the 3,285 exhibitors in Düsseldorf. Companies reported a host of new leads, many of which already led to closed deals over the eight days of the trade fair.

This summary captures highlights of two days 2016 Recycled Polyester and PET Packaging Conference which took place September 21th – 23th in Shanghai, China. Despite the polyester recycling industry suffers from the pressure of low crude oil and virgin PET prices with all other consequences out of this 280 participants and exhibition visitors from China and abroad demonstrated their ongoing interest. Sidel has been awarded certification for the efficiency of its Sidel Matrix blower by a leading technical service organisation, TÜV SÜD. The new certification is an international stamp of approval for the energy consumption efficiency of Sidel equipment. It is claimed to provide objective validation of the blower’s performance by an independent organisation and demonstrates that the Sidel Matrix blower complies with very high standards, is safe and sustainable - and has minimal impact on the environment.

Dipl.-Ing. Michael Mehnert (34), youngest son of the company’s founder Gottfried Mehnert, joined the family company in various functions after successfully studying mechanical engineering in Aachen. Husky Injection Molding Systems demonstrates two complete integrated closure systems. The recently introduced HyCAP 4 system for beverage closure manufacturing comes with more machine, mould and auxiliary integration to offer increased productivity, energy efficiency and a simplified operator experience. The HyCAP 4 is running a 1.25 gram 29/25 closure for a mineral water application at a 2.4 second cycle time. For the first time, the company also demonstrates its new system solution for the manufacture of specialty closures, HyperSync.

SMI presents its rotary blow moulder series EBS (Electronic Blowing System) Ergon at K show. The series includes seven models, from 4 to 16 cavities, suitable for the production of PET containers up to 3 litres. The company states that the maximum output is of 2,300 bph per cavity for the 0.5 litre format (still water). Furthermore there are three HC models, from 3 to 6 cavities, for the production of containers up to 10 litres, with a maximum output of 1,200 bph per cavity for the 5 litre format.

Cooperation between NGR and Kuhne is raising the level of quality for direct production of food-grade PET sheets made of skeleton scrap, sheet production scrap or PET bottle flakes. The integrated system consists of a shredder-feeder-extruder combination for producing plastic melt, the P:React unit for improving the quality of PET and the sheet system from Kuhne for producing PET sheets with tightest tolerances. Both PET sheet producers and thermoformed part manufacturers will benefit from the result.

In-Mould labels company Verstraete will, in the coming months, start preparing the construction work for the new production site in Clarksville, Tennessee (US), together with its parent company Constantia Flexibles. The new site is intended to allow Belgium-based Verstraete IML to get closer to its customers in the largest growth market for IML labels outside Europe. The site will begin production in the second half of 2017 and will have multiple printing press and finishing lines. Some 55 jobs will be created.

The Swiss Säntis Ag is transferring its PET packaging business unit at the end of 2016 to Bonapack AG also located in Switzerland. Bonapack will also be managing the business in the PET blow moulding unit in cooperation with Biplast AG, particularly in the Development, Production and Service divisions.

For most PET converters, the overall market is growing whereas average bottle quantities per contract are getting smaller. This means a variety of different orders have to be produced within the same time frame, for example to include different neck types. To meet such demanding circumstances, increased flexibility is the only way forward.

For the first time at the Düsseldorf fair the compact line with the 24-cavity CCM compression press synchronised with the cap anti-tamper band slitter will be presented. The Colorarcap cap digital printing solution has now reached a higher level of development that allows coloured caps to be decorated too, thus exploring what some consider being the final frontier of digital decoration: unlimited colour development, ultra-high definition, yet also flexibility to ensure the right response whatever the customer’s production/promotional needs.

The Infrared Rotary Dryers IRD is used for crystallising and drying virgin or regrind materials for a number of plastics, including PET. Through the use of the continuously functioning IRD, the need for energy-intensive processing using dry air is said to be completely eliminated.

The management board of the Albis Plastic Group has announced that Carsten W. Wörner, Chief Sales Officer will, by mutual agreement, leave the company on 30 September 2016. Wörner took on the position of CSO on April 1, 2012 and since then has lead worldwide sales and the technical applications department. He was also responsible for the structural adjustment of sales as part of the progressive internationalisation strategy.

The non-profit environmental association Ecoce is promoting the collection and recycling of post-consumer PET and other materials in Mexico. The association has now published new figures on recycling in Mexico: according to their own figures, Mexico has recorded the highest collection quota in America for PET for the past four years.

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global chemical producer, announced the completion of joint venture (JV) of IVL’s PET Company, Micro Polypet Private Limited (MicroPet), in India with Dhunseri Petrochem Ltd. (Dhunseri). Simultaneously, IVL has acquired a 50% stake in Dhunseri’s PET Company in India, Dhunseri Petglobal Ltd. By combining the two companies as equal partners, the resulting total capacity of 700,000t/a will make the new JV the second largest in India.

Egeria, the Dutch based private equity firm has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Group (“Clondalkin”) from an affiliate of Warburg Pincus. Completion of the transaction is expected to occur in Q4 2016.

Nazca Capital –a Spanish private equity firm focused in the mid-market segment– has reached an agreement with the family Baños (owners and founders of the company) for the acquisition of a stake around 75% in Caiba, a leading Spanish company specialised in the manufacture of PET preforms and containers for the food, household products and personal hygiene sectors.

Demand for pressure-sensitive materials continues to grow in Europe. To meet future demand, Avery Dennison is strengthening its European manufacturing footprint with a $65 million investment to expand its Rodange, Luxembourg production facility. The investment is one of Avery Dennison’s largest operational initiatives globally in recent years.

Coca-Cola created a new packaging design for their Diet Coke bottles in Canada. The vibrant patterns are available for a limited time for 500ml PET as well as 355ml and 237m. glass bottles of Diet Coke. The “One of a Kind” campaigns offers millions of designs to choose from as no two bottles look exactly the same.

In the packaging sector, film manufacturers are demanding lines which are becoming ever wider, ever faster and ever more efficient, with high production capacity and low energy consumption. Terekas Sweden AB launched mini PET stretch blowing machine series FlexBlow. In combination with sales conveyor promotion method, Terekas Sweden AB has tripled their flexible PET blower sales this year compared to last year. The company has signed 17 contracts across the world, last year 6 flexible series machines has been sold.

Plastipak Packaging Inc. said it will add two manufacturing lines to its Birmingham area facility,a $10.4 million expansion that will create at least five new jobs. The new lines will be added to its location at the Jefferson County Metropolitan Park in McCalla, Alabama, USA where it manufactures plastic bottles for the beverage industry.

The closures used for 5-gallon water containers are known as HOD (Home and Office Delivery) closures. The necks of these containers are standard across the world. Due to the blow moulding process, however, the necks usually exhibit poor quality and a variation in diameter which often results in leakage from 5-gallon containers, except where an adequate HOD closure is used.

Coca-Cola Sweden partnered with Constantia Flexibles to create a label with a whitened varnish area that allows consumers to draw their own designs directly onto the label. In order to achieve this, Constantia Flexibles supplied a 38 µ white OPP film label, creating a specific area that is fully customisable with crayons.

Amcor Rigid Plastics has announced the appointment of Ashish Saxena as vice president and general manager of LiquiForm Group LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amcor. According to a WARN notice filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Graham Packaging is going to close its plant in Belvidere, New Jersey, USA. The effective date is September 26, 2016. The closing of the plastic container manufacturers’ facility will affect 71 employees.

Spectra Packaging have recently invested in new injection stretch blow moulding machinery at their Suffolk plant, UK, to counter increased customer demand. This follows recent expansion initiatives across all facets of the business, which have seen new blow moulding machines as well as additional tooling equipment and extra investment in the firm's busy decoration department.

Torus Measurement Systems have announced the launch of the B304 Top Load & Volume Gauge. The system showcases a single operation Top Load & Volume Test to the plastic bottle market. The KHS Group looks back on an exceptionally successful month. In July 2016 the Group, headquartered in Dortmund, Germany, was able to record several big orders. Much of this success was attributable to the sale of two FreshSafe PET TriBlock lines to a major soft drinks producer in India. Lightweight Containers is opening a new production plant in Grossbreitenbach, Germany. The fully automated production line has a capacity of 400 KeyKeg Slimlines per hour and will be operational in the third quarter of this year. The line can produce all the members of the KeyKeg Slimline family of kegs. PET-Verpackungen Deutschland is the production partner and will manage the day-to-day production.

Amcor Rigid Plastics announced plans to close the company’s preform manufacturing facility located in Dayton, Ohio, USA. The plant, which manufactures plastic preforms for the beverage industry and other applications, will begin a gradual ramp-down and is scheduled to cease production by December 31, 2016.

Bekum Maschinenfabriken now have a new Technical Director. Dr Wilfried Lehmann will take over this role with immediate effect. Dr Lehmann is known to Bekum customers already, as he previously held this position from 1998 to 2002. With this foundation, he will be able to draw on his practical experience in blow-moulding technology.

Ciel, one of the major water-bottling companies operating in Morocco, has been supplied with the new integrated rinser-filler-capper monoblock unit. The Ciel brand – part of the Coca-Cola Group – has purchased the first monoblock filler unit 12-12-4 ALF produced by Sacmi Filling. Sidel, has collaborated with Algar Agro to produce the world’s lightest 900ml PET bottle for edible oil. A large player in the Brazilian market, Algar Agro worked with Sidel to reduce the total weight of its finished bottle from 18 to 14 grams - a reduction of 22%.

BASF and Avantium announced that they have signed a letter of intent and entered into exclusive negotiations to establish a joint venture (JV) for the production and marketing of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), as well as marketing of polyethylenefuranoate (PEF), based on this new chemical building block. FDCA is produced from renewable resources.

Demo Design and Moulds has developed the new "Sport Cap" container for Acqua Smeraldina, Italy. The company’s design department studied the new 0.75 litre bottle with a push and pull cap for still products, beginning with the client’s requests, and transforming them in to a functional product.

The agreement entered by Athena Automation Ltd., Ontario, Canada, and Sipa S.p.A., Italy, in December 2012 has expired. Athena will support Sipa in shipping and servicing the remaining "Athena for Sipa" machine inventory.

Petainer has expanded its distribution and manufacturing footprint in the US, following its partnership with G3 Enterprises, who offers wine and spirits industry packaging and supply chain solutions across the US. The partnership leverages Petainer’s expanding customer base, and the growing popularity of wine-on-tap as a viable alternative to bottled wine for the retail trade.

With the KHS InnoPET Tri-Block the KHS Group has now launched a filling and packaging system for PET bottles to market which incorporates a stretch blow moulder, labeller and filler. With consistent neck handling KHS also enables lightweight PET to be processed. This means that a 0.5 litre bottle weighing notably less than eight grams can now be produced, for instance.

New Delhi based packaging company AMD Industries Ltd. has informed the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) that it has set up four new lines of machines at its factory in Neemrana (Rajasthan) having a capacity of manufacturing 25,000 PET bottles and around 22,000 jars per day.

UK-based Montgomery Waters has acquired an additional complete PET line from Sidel. The line is bottling still and sparkling water with the latest generation of Sidel Matrix equipment. The company from Wales has several spring and mineral water sources dedicated to the supply of still, sparkling, flavoured and vitamin-enriched water under its Aquaroma, Celtic Spring and Aquavit brands, along with an operation bottling brands for other manufacturers. Among Montgomery Waters’ customers in the competitive €2bn UK bottled water market are several leading nationwide retailers, sports club chains and hotels.

The requisite blow moulding pressure is one of the most important cost factors involved in producing PET bottles in a stretch blow moulding process. This issue is a highly complex one. In some cases, however, the limiting factor for reducing the blow moulding pressure is not the bottle design, nor the bottle specification that has to be met, nor the PET material type, but the inadequate venting.

The Plastics Industry Trade Association (aka SPI) announced at the Packaging Conference that NPE 2018 will feature a new 9300sqm pavilion spotlighting innovations, technologies and solutions for the beverage bottling and PET market: The Bottle Zone.

The PET market has, for several years, been one of the most promising and rapidly developing segments of the Russian plastics industry. UPM Raflatac will present the results of a full-body shrink sleeve label recycling study, featuring the company's new Rafshrink PO MDO 40 HS product, at the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) Technical Forum in New Orleans, Louisiana. The study, conducted with Plastic Forming Enterprises, will demonstrate that Rafshrink, a polyolefin-based, roll-fed shrink film label provides good recyclability gains over PETG labels, currently the industry-standard film label for shrink sleeve applications, when used with clear PET bottles.

Water is the most important basic ingredient for the brewing and beverages industry. But that's just part of the story - In the production processes water fulfills many other functions, either as process water, an energy carrier or in cleaning operations. Water demand and water consumption is therefore correspondingly high.

Worldwide consumers are becoming increasingly health-conscious and moving towards drinks with a more natural taste. This has brought a focus from beverage producers on filling methods that protect the quality, taste and vitamin content, without using preservatives or additives. The ChemChina - China National Chemical Corporation has agreed to acquire KraussMaffei Group, manufacturer of machinery and systems for producing and processing plastics and rubber, from Onex Corporation for a cash enterprise value of €925million. The transaction is subject to closing conditions including customary regulatory approvals. ChemChina together with Guoxin International Investment Corporation and Agic Capital will make this acquisition.

Amsler Equipment Inc. has just completed and shipped its first next-generation single-cavity LM15X PET stretch blow moulding machine to R&D/Leverage in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The requirement from R&D/Leverage for a machine to test and run moulds for various PET machines led to the development of the new series. The result is a small-footprint fully-functioning, production-capable, single-cavity PET stretch blow moulding machine. It can be used in labs, for small production runs, pilot production, customer trials, mould run-offs, material testing and preform testing.

The Krones subsidiary Kosme S.r.l., Roverbella, has now, in the shape of the 3 Bloc, presented a block configuration available in two different variants, for PET and for HDPE containers. The 3 Bloc for PET comprises three concatenated machines: blow-moulder, filler and labeller.

Tomra Sorting Recycling recently presented their Autosort Flake featuring simultaneous triple-sorting capability. The machine combines color detection and enhanced material information to maximize the recovery of high-quality recycled products. The Autosort Flake analyses and sorts flakes by color and material at the same time and also detects metal.

The competition, which recognises and rewards international packaging design innovation is organised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and is recognised as one of the important packaging awards competition, with WorldStars presented to packs that have already won acknowledgement in national or regional competitions.

The German Brückner Group, a family-owned enterprise in the machine building industry, announces internal management changes.

The announced tracer workshop taking place on February 24, 2016 at Brussels aims a cross-industry discussion to harmonise the use of tracers into plastic packaging materials. The workshop will focus on PET as a start and intends to create a precedent for other plastics later on. It is organised by Petcore Europe.

December 18, 2015 | Hosaf South Africa PET project

Polymetrix A.G., formerly a Buhler Group Company, and Chemtex, through its Affiliate Biochemtex, and Hosaf, a division of P.G. Bison have entered into definitive agreements to increase the capacity of the Hosaf PET resin plant at Jacobs, South Africa by about 88%. The project will utilise state of the art Invista technology for melt phase polymerization and Polymetrix technology for solid state polycondensation. Polymetrix and Chemtex will provide the technology package, design and equipment for the plant. This PET technology is commercially proven at large scale single line capacities and delivered through Chemtex to many major producers around the world. The African region PET demand has been growing at a steady pace. This project will deliver high quality PET resin with enhanced plant economics and will position Hosaf as a highly competitive and provider of PET resin in the growing regional market.

Erema GmbH is all set to announce the founding of the subsidiary OOO Erema at Interplastica Moscow from January 28-30, 2016 which will see it investing in its presence in the Russian-speaking area. Kalojan Iliev, who can turn to many years of experience in the CIS area and has been responsible for this territory for Erema for some time, will be appointed Managing Director of OOO Erema. The official presentation of the newly founded subsidiary will take place at the Erema Booth A20 in Hall 8.1 at Interplastica Moscow.

On its Ludwigshafen site, BASF is going to expand the capacities for the production of alpha blue pigments which will be available from fall 2016 onwards. The reddish copper phthalocyanine pigments which – in addition to other blue and green pigments that are based on the same chemistry – are sold by BASF under the Heliogen brand, are characterised by their fastness properties. In addition, alpha blue pigments stand out due to their versatile applicability that includes plastic coloring, printing applications as well as industrial and automotive coatings and paints.

With its UpCentre, Erema, has opened the doors to a whole new form of upcycling service which means that customers have Corema technology for the sampling of recycling compounds at their disposal. Robert Obermayr, Corema Product Manager, explains: "On the way from recyclates to made-to-measure recycling compounds you need a lot of fine tuning in practice: processors demand varying quantities of samples – as often and as long as necessary until the recycling compound meets the exact requirements of their concrete application, such as film or injection moulding parts." Customers can take advantage of the UpCentre to produce sample amounts in tonnes quickly and flexibly. The UpCentre features a Corema 1108 T for a maximum monthly production of 500 tonnes.

PET is by far the most recycled plastic material in Europe, with the equivalent of over 66 billion bottles recycled in 2014. Brothers Drinks Co. Limited started shipping its PET liner to recycling specialist PET UK on a regular basis in July 2014. In the following 12 months, approximately 50 tons of PET liner has gone from Somerset to Scotland. This saved from incineration the waste liner from more than 1.5 million square metres of labels, and yielded enough PET resin to make almost 2 million microwave trays.

At the Saudi Plastics and Petrochem trade fair, January 18-21, 2016 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the exhibits and demonstrations of the Austrian machine builder Engel will revolve around the manufacture of bottle caps, thin-walled packaging, pallets and fittings, as well as consumables for medical and laboratory use.

With its new KHS InnoPET Plasmax 20QS development, the KHS Group Company offers a coating machine designed to produce bottles with volumes ranging from 100 to 350ml. Beverage producers are able to process small format PET bottles particularly economically. The glass interior coating enables beverage producers to reduce material costs and achieve a longer shelf life especially for sensitive beverages.

Alpla GmbH will take over the Egyptian production site of Argo S.A. at the end of 2015. In doing so, the Austrian-based specialist in plastic packaging will expand its market position in Africa. Alpla opened its first site on the African continent in 2014 in Johannesburg.

The "Flacco Round" from PET Power company bottles are characterised by their wide round neck with downward taper. The Flacco can be ordered with or without drops at the top of the round neck. The Flacco range currently consists of a 300ml and a 500ml bottle, both with a standard SP410 neck finish. As a result, the bottle can be combined with all kinds of standard pumps and other closures.

Liese GmbH’s Brau Beviale 2015 stand hosted the public debut of its new Hygienic clamping unit, the latest addition to its Flexximal range. The German manufacturer, based in Walzbachtal, says that the unit is intended for use in fillers, infeed, discharge and transfer starwheels. In common with other products in the Flexximal range, including "Crashsafe" and "Light", the Hygienic’s clamp is designed to work with a range of bottle forms, with diameters from 60-90mm. The unit operates independently of the rotation and running direction and can be controlled from both above and below.

Microleaks, cracks and closure faults: The Heuft squeezer II QS provides the performance for identifying leaking plastic bottles (PET and HDPE) reliably and rejecting them. The highly automated Heuft Spectrum device platform engineered with a flexible belt drive which guides, rotates and presses the bottles together by applying the right amount of pressure is longer and therefore this applies to the inspection path available.

GCS has developed a bi-injected flip-top cap with a tamper-evident device for Ponti, the Italian producer of vinegars, vinegar-based condiments and antipasti. Manufactured by Zeller Plastik Italy, one of the GCS’ 21 factories, the Phebus push-on cap for PCO 1881 bottle has a raised directional spout that makes it ideal for pouring thinner liquids such as Ponti’s range of vinegar-based condiments.

To keep up with developments on the Indian food and beverage market, the range of products and services at International PackTech India and drink technology India will be joined by a third event, the newly developed FoodPex India. It will focus on the processing and packaging of solid foods of all kinds. Shanghai World of Packaging 2015 was successfully concluded on November 20, 2015 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), P.R. China. KHS 0.5-liter PET bottles weighing 8.9 grams and 1.5 liter PET containers at 22 grams are now available in Brazilian stores for the first time. The German systems provider of packaging and filling machinery has developed special bottle designs and preforms for both formats, making the PET bottles much lighter than the plastic bottles commonly found in South America while giving consumers the high degree of bottle stability they expect.

Husky Injection Molding Systems wrapped up its first appearance at Gulfood Manufacturing 2015 (October 27-29, Dubai, United Arab Emirates), one of the biggest food and beverage processing events in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Plastipak Packaging (formerly APPE) recently announced the launch of a crown finish PET bottle. Designed to be capped with a metal crown closure, the bottle is suitable for applications such as beer, cider, alcopops and juice shots.

SMI has selected Agr International to provide pressure testing equipment for their quality management and testing program. The Agr PPT3000 packaging pressure tester shall help SMI to qualify bottles created in their design center and ensure that they meet pressure strength and volume expansion design goals. The tester offers pressure and volume expansion testing capabilities for PET containers with a number of standard and custom test profiles. Furthermore, it can also be used to provide immediate predicted shelf-life characteristics of individual PET containers for CO2, O2 or water loss, in a matter of 60 seconds, announces Agr.

Linx Printing Technologies has expanded its portfolio of laser coders with the introduction of a new CO2 steered beam model.

The LC Linear is intended for leak inspection of empty plastic bottles. The features include an inspection speed from 1 to 25 bottles per minutes (60 to 1500 bph), depending on container size and testing requirements, a capability of fitting containers up to 8 inches in length, 4.75 inches in width, and 13.75 inches in height, a simple and efficient colour touch screen interface, a multi-strand conveyor style and a sensitive leak test with capabilities to detect between 0.004’’ and 0.020’’ diameter hole size, depending on container size and test time.

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), Thailand, announced that it has signed an agreement to purchase the PET, PIA and PTA business of Compañía Española de Petróleos S.A.U. (Cepsa) in Guadarranque-San Roque, Cadiz, Spain, subject to necessary legal approvals.

The Austrian group of companies Alpla, producer of plastic packaging with 154 production plants in 40 countries and a turnover of ca. 3 billion Euros, will take over via its Italian subsidiary Alpla Italia s.r.l., located in Tortona (AL), 100% of the leading Italian PET preform producer Plasco S.p.A.

At this year's Brau Beviale in Nuremberg, KHS GmbH was presented with the World Beverage Innovation Award from British publisher FoodBev Media for its lightweight 1-liter PET milk bottle. The specialist for filling and packaging systems was victorious with this bottle in the category "Best Environmental Sustainability Initiative". The new solution scores in particular thanks to its low weight and the related material savings. Holland Colours announces the expansion of its portfolio with its new generation slip agent, the Holco Slip 271-Series. Holco Slip shall prevent damage and allows for more storage. The slip agent for PET is a product that focuses on reducing the coefficient of friction (COF) during preform production. Lowering of the COF results in an easier release of the preforms from the cavities, scratch-free preforms due to less friction and drop marks from falling preforms into the octabin.

Amcor Rigid Plastics USA, LLC has purchased the manufacturing assets and intellectual property of Eco-Groupe, Inc., a privately held preform manufacturing operation with four manufacturing sites in the United States. Amcor Rigid Plastics has also purchased a minority equity interest in EnKon, LLC, a woman-owned business enterprise affiliate of Eco-Groupe, Inc.

For over 50 years, Christian Berner AB has represented German GEA process technologies in Sweden. GEA has implemented a new organisational structure in order to enhance closeness to customers, and is now accordingly reorganising its sales channels. In Sweden, GEA is expanding its sales force at its Gothenburg office and is therefore ending its long-term collaboration with Christian Berner AB. This means that all process equipment will be available at the GEA Sweden office in Gothenburg.

At Fakuma exhibition Cold Jet introduced their new Plastics Edition machines. The Aero Plastics Edition systems are dry ice cleaning systems, working with the "Sure Flow" pellet technology. According to the company the systems feature an isolated, insulated hopper with advanced agitation, internal pressure regulator, dosing system and coated aluminum or stainless steel rotor. Additional accessories include the XP Performance applicator with dual triggers for drop protection, sealed electrical switches, tough outer shell, two industrial-grade lights and ergonomic design; a rubber blast hose designed to eliminate constrictions and freezing; Sure Flow quick disconnect fittings and variable fragmenting Mern nozzles which have been predefined through the company. Furthermore Cold Jet presented its dry ice cleaning solution using a Plastics Edition i3 Micro Clean, demonstrating the automated cleaning of a PET preform mould.

Amcor’s sustainability report shows the company's sustainability performance for the 2014/2015 period. The performance highlights for 2015 include the surpassed Enviro Action five year targets (reduction in greenhouse gas intensity, waste to landfill and water use achieved since the baseline year 2010-2011) with a reduction of 28% in greenhouse gas emissions intensity; 60% waste to landfill intensity reduction; and 20% decrease in water use intensity.

At Fakuma show Engel presented their new software iQ clamp control. By continuously adapting the clamping force, the software keeps the mould breathing constant even under fluctuating process conditions, says the company.

At this year’s Brau Beviale Jürgen Louml;hrke GmbH (Louml;hrke) will be found in hall 4 stand 311. With CDES Duo DIS Louml;hrke is presenting its chlorine dioxide generation. The system is equipped with two separate reactors and dosing units. It is possible to produce two chlorine dioxide solutions with different characteristics. Both a material friendly and a disinfection solution, approved for drinking water, can be made, asserts the company.

On 24 November 2015, the annual Petcore Europe Conference will take place in Brussels. In previous years known as the PET Network Day, the conference brings together more than 100 experts and leaders from the whole PET value chain in Europe and beyond as well as representatives from the European institutions. This year, the conference will focus on the four key aspects Sustainability, circular Economy, Innovation and Globalisation. "For everyone involved in the PET value chain it is essential to stay up to date on the latest developments regarding European legislation, trends, innovation and what is happening outside of Europe," outlines Patrick Peuch, Petcore Europe Executive Director.

New data compiled by the Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC) show that between 2000 and 2014, the average weight of a half-liter, single-serve PET water bottle has declined 52% to 9.25 grams. This has resulted in a savings of 2.8 billion kilograms of PET resin since 2000.

R&D/Leverage UK conducted its first press conference and grand opening of its PSL (Product Solutions Lab). The presentations were opened with Alan Tolley, Managing Director of R&D/Leverage UK, followed by a few welcoming words from Labour Party politician Gloria De Piero.

Husky Injection Molding Systems announced that it will exhibit for the first time at Gulfood Manufacturing 2015 (October 27-29, Dubai, United Arab Emirates). Husky’s booth (A1-44, Hall 1) will showcase its range of PET preform and beverage closure moulding solutions.

The Bio Hub programme has enabled the development and production of new chemicals using renewable agriculture materials, such as cereals which are a sustainable substitute for well-known fossil-based chemicals. The new bio-based forms of polyester have many possible end-user applications, including packaging. The programme was undertaken by international French biorefining group, Roquette, a global leader in the processing of plant-based raw materials, and subsidised by BPI France, the French agency for industrial innovation.
