In October last year, PepsiCo announced that it would be the first beverage company in Germany to exclusively use 100 per cent rPET in all of its carbonated beverage bottles by the end of 2021. In April, the entire Lipton Ice Tea range was converted to rPET. Now the company is exceeding its own timetable and is switching to 100 per cent rPET 100 days earlier than planned.
The change affects all PepsiCo Carbonated Soft Drink (CSD) beverage brands, including Pepsi, Pepsi MAX and SchwipSchwap. This also applies to all company-owned and franchised operations. In order to realise the vision of a circular economy, the company states to invest seven million euros in Germany, and to save 15,000 tonnes of new plastic per year.
PepsiCo’s commitment is aligned with the European Commission’s voluntary recycled plastics campaign, which aims to ensure that ten million tonnes of recycled plastics are used to make new products in the EU market by 2025. Globally, PepsiCo recently announced a goal to reduce the amount of untreated plastic per serving across its food and beverage portfolio by 50% by 2030 in its new sustainability agenda, pep+.
