Nestlé Waters North America announced that it intends to achieve 25% recycled plastic across its U.S. domestic portfolio by 2021. The company plans to continue expanding its use of recycled materials in the coming years, further setting an ambition to reach 50% recycled plastic by 2025. Therefore, the company is expanding its relationship with key supplier, Plastrec (Joliette, Canada), and working with other suppliers, to support the company’s ability to nearly quadruple its use of food-grade recycled plastic, or rPET, in less than three years. This includes the expansion of its partnership with CarbonLITE, as the rPET supplier builds a third U.S. facility in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania.

The interpack alliance of Messe Düsseldorf expands into the Middle East Africa (MEA) region – its “pacprocess MEA” will be held annually at the Egypt International Exhibition Center in Cairo starting in December 2019. The trade fair can count on broad-based support from numerous partners from business and Egyptian government organisations and/or associations. The debut event is scheduled for December 9-11, 2019 and will run concurrently with FoodAfrica, the leading food trade fair in the region.

Nestlé announced the creation of the Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences, dedicated to the discovery and development of functional, safe and environmentally friendly packaging solutions. This is claimed to be a step further to achieve the Company’s commitment to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. The Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences, which is part of Nestlé’s global research organisation, will be located in Lausanne, Switzerland. It will employ around 50 people and include a state-of-the-art laboratory complex as well as facilities for rapid prototyping.

United Caps, an international manufacturer of caps and closures, reported that it held a successful event at its Hungarian plant to celebrate the manufacture of its 10 billionth closure this year, its innovative doubleflow closure for edible oils. It is the first time in the company’s history that 10 billion closures have been produced in a 12 month period.

Carbios announces the signature of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Kem OneE for an implementation project in the French Chemical Valley of an industrial demonstration plant to secure the value of its PET recycling technology. Carbios biorecycling technology is is intended to enable to use waste plastics and fibres instead of petrochemicals to produce new virgin material, with no loss of quality.

Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL) has completed the acquisition of 74% of the share capital of Medco Plast for Packing and Packaging Systems S.A.E. (Medco Plast) from Middle East Glass Manufacturing Co. S.A.E. (MEG) and the Samaha family. Following the acquisition, MEG will retain a 16% shareholding in Medco Plast, and the Samaha family 10%. Medco Plast is the largest manufacturer of recyclable PET preforms, injection moulded products, and closures to all the multinational soft drink and water manufacturers operating in Egypt, with a 25% market share.

Since establishing the first subsidiary in China in 2010, Tomra has been actively increasing its investment and business activities in this dynamic market. Currently Tomra has three businesses operating in China: recycling sorting, food sorting and grading and beverage container collection. Tomras’s business activity in China ranges from business development, product management, R&D, assembly, sales, service and application validation in the local test centers.

KHS has presented its award for innovative bottle designs for the second time running. The manufacturer of filling and packaging systems for the beverage, food and non-food industries launched the project last year together with the School of Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster, Germany. The task set by this year’s student competition was to devise ideas for aseptic bottles. Various designs were submitted by the students, with the best three distinguished at a special award ceremony.

The production cell designed as a complete solution around the IntElect S 180 produces decorative lids for food containers. Sumitomo (SHI) Demag is presenting this exhibit in a joint project with Rouxel as the injection compression mould manufacturer, Machines Pagès as a specialist for high-speed extraction robots and downstream moulded part handling, Verstraete as experts for decorative labels.

Since commencing production in 2010, 1Blow has been producing next-generation stretch blow-moulding machines suited for PET bottles converters. In 2018, these limits are said to be pushed further with the commercial launch of the new 4LO stretch blow-moulder.
