Introduction

As the PET industry transforms from a niche application to commodity business the challenges for designers of PET packaging rise sharply. The demand is for ever new bottle shapes that must meet strict economical limitations as little margin of error is possible. While there is now a multitude of design examples from previous applications a standard guide has so far been missing to help designers meet these challenges. This book deals with all three main components of a PET package: bottle, preform, and closure. Practical and comprehensive, it outlines the steps from concept to finished bottle. Along the way is a compendium of questions the designer must ask before he or she can even start to develop a bottle. And when these questions have been answered preform design offers the next conundrum. And once the preform has been developed a suitable closure must be chosen out of the array of available designs.

Our book cannot answer all questions but it draws a map through the maze of options and considerations and leads the way to knowledgeable solutions. It is the authors‘ strong belief that by giving guidelines to successful packages the industry as a whole will benefit greatly. Leveling the playing field and opening the doors to improved PET packages is our sincere intention.
